After trying to diagnose my troubles alone... I have come to a dead end... and I have no [free]alternative than to ask for help from the collective knowledge of the Hangout.

About 2 weeks ago, my computer has been really really really slow. At first, I thought, maybe it's because of all the dust in the tower, so I took it to work, where I used an air compressor to blow this sucker clean, that did not help. After that, I checked all the cables and listened for any weird sounds, thinking it may be mechanical, but there weren't any odd noises. Then I suspect that it may be a memory issue, I got the newest version of Memtest86, and passed with honors.

So, with no where else to turn, can someone please lend a hand.

here are some pictures of what has been happening to my computer...

below happens occasionally when my computer goes to sleep, I manually do this when heading to work/bed ... and my computer also falls asleep by itself after idling for 1 hour, because of this, I am now shutting my computer off and not letting it sleep
    [IMG]

my morning routine is to wake(recently: turning on) the computer, then jumping in the shower; now I find this lovely surprise after turning on the computer, also happens occasionally
    [IMG]

    results from the Memtest86...

and of course, I can't tell the doctor something is wrong without describing where the pain is...
-the simplest things such as downloading a file, as a firefox user, whenever I download something, the download progress window shows up, well my computer would 'choke up' for 2-3 seconds where nothing responds before the download window pops up with the download progress...
-tasks I would normally breeze through without a pause now has my computer hesitating 2-3 seconds...
-even opening the pictures above to upload to imageshack, would cause my computer to freeze momentarily...
-watching a downloaded show on my computer, the video would choke and skip at times, with no apparent interval...

I have updated Microsoft Security Essentials, no malware/trojan/virus/adware/etc... same goes for AVG and Ad-Aware. Hard drive de-frag are done weekly. All drivers are up to date to my knowledge. I have not installed new software, nor added new hardware.

Please, anyone with expertise in computer troubleshoot diagnostics, feel free to chime in.

Of course, wouldn't be an ask4help thread without mentioning that I will reward you with rep.

    Love,

    What OS do you have?
    How old is the computer?
Have you installed anything new recently? Any new updates you can pin down? Driver updates?

The power error BSOD doesn't really tell us a whole lot, unfortunately - could be an issue with just about anything, from the PSU to an issue with something you have plugged into the system. Could even be a driver conflict.

I would probably back up your data (just in case all the slowdown is HDD related) and try and start up 'barebones'. ie, remove any peripherals and try to start the machine with only what you need. Hell, I'd even try and switch keyboard and mouse if you've got any extra.

Then, if that doesn't seem to show any improvement, I'd also start in Safe Mode (tap F8 at startup, select Safe Mode) just to see if you are getting any slowdown or BSODs while there. Might help to tell us whether or not it is software related. (In other words, if all those tasks cause the same pauses/freezes).

I'd say that your problem is going to be near impossible to solve unless you know something about computers. It's not going to be easy.

Could be a number of things, including a failing HDD. Was that chkdsk running before your boot in the 2nd picture?

I'm on my phone. Also, having CHKDSK come up before a boot up is a bad sign. back up your data ASAP.

Looks like a drivers/hardwares conflict. You need to give us your computer hardware specs and OS. Programs that you're running and check the Task Manager to see any weird programs that are running that's sucking the CPU juice.

You can also try checking your DUMP FILE.

First and simplest thing you should/can do is boot that baby in safe mode and run a virus scan. Even with protection something can slip through.

    .. and delete your p*rn...

Open a command prompt window with elevated administrator privileges.
Type the following command and press ENTER:

    powercfg /hibernate /size 100

    see if that works

Sometimes your registry is so messed up it will slow down little task like this also.

If it is not that I agree with Bebop that it might be a hardware problem

    Two things come to mind-

Do you have an external video card or onboard? If it's external, take it out, try the system with a different card or the onboard.

It may be a popped capacitor on the motherboard. Scrutinize.

Like the other nerds said, the more specific details, the better.

Microsoft Security Essentials is better than the AVG crap.

    I am running Windows 7 64bit
Computer is about 1.5 years old, purchased it on the Cyber Monday after 2009 Thanksgiving
I have not installed anything new, only thing that even remotely comes close is that I updated the windows desktop widget, which monitors your CPU/Ram usage, and bandwidth usage, which I have all disabled but it did not relieve my computer's slowness.

I was afraid of answers like this :(

To say I'm a novice when it comes to stuff like this is an understatement. I have never experienced anything like the 2nd screen, I don't know what to make of it, and I don't know how to go about finding info regarding CHKDSK, please advise.

    Intel Core i7 CPU 920 2.67GHz
    6gb RAM
    1TB HDD
    Windows 7 64-bit OS
    nvidia GeForce GTS 250

I have been monitoring Task Manager, nothing jumps out, all tasks are within 'reasonable' range. I will have to google with DUMP FILE is and report back.

That was actually one of the top results when googling the error message in the first screen, I have tried that, and it says "access denied"

I will look into that. My computer is 'fairly' new, I have posted the specs above. For a more detailed hardware listing, I will dig into the box that it came in and read the receipt. Only thing I have changed is the PSU, it blew out when Starcraft 2 overheated it because of their software issue. Now I'm using a Corsair TX850w.

This could be a bunch of things :

If none of the above work,

    1) Download something like HDTune and run a scan on your drive to look for potential problems like bad sectors on the drive (run the lengthy scan, not the quick scan).
    2) Download this and run it to see if it finds anything : http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208283363

Who build this rig for you? If you know at least something about installing hardwares try opening up the case and check your hardwares. Check to see if the fans are functioning for the CPU and the Video card. Use a program inWindows to check the temperature of the CPU and the Video card. If they are all ok. Try uninstalling individual drivers from Windows and see what happen. If you have a restore point that's been working good for you try a System Restore to that date.

It could also be your system files been corrupted somehow. If you don't know much about the computer try virus scan as a first option(scan your C system files). I would recommend 2 type of virus program to scan your system.

Another thing you can do is go into Safe mode(Press F8 on reboot) with networking and see if you're having the same problem when playing around with the OS inside safe mode. If it's ok in Safe Mode than pretty much it's a software issues suck as drivers.

Safe Mode then Virus scan should be first then try a system restore or revert back to last working configuration. take it one step at a time and do the simple fixes first. If you are still having trouble after that you can chew on all the computer jargon.

That CHKDSK usually comes on when your computer gets a blue screen or shuts down unexpectedly.

Have you downloaded anything in the last couple of weeks? Try deleting that too.

So you did replace your PSU? Did you reconnect all the wiring yourself? I would double check with your connections. Make sure the connection to the video card is correct with enough power.
