Since I was more than satisfied with Rick Adelman as coach, I'm unsure of McHale as a coach. However, if he can teach our big men (are you listening, Hasheem?) the footwork that made him a top PF of all time. Thabeet, Hill, 2Pat and even Scola could learn a few moves. From that standpoint, I am very excited McHale is aboard the Rocket ship.
McHale....and it's not even close. Sorry Luis. McHale doesn't really show it too much these days in a suit and tie. But back then, he was one the NBA's original "knuckle draggers". I'd be curious to know what McHale's actual wingspan is. Back in the day, many of us referred to McHale as "Lurch". The character from The Addams Family TV series.
He was 6-foot-11 with about a 12-foot-90 wingspan. I swear, the only reason his shoulders were coathangers like that was because God showed him some mercy and didn't want his knuckles to drag. Seriously, from Googling, all I can find is he had an 8 foot wingspan. Not sure how accurate that is, though. We used to call him Herman Munster. He was too emotional to be Lurch. And to the OP. Come on. McHale is like a Rolls Royce to Luis' VW Golf.
I see a resemblance. McHale and Yao in his undersized Frankenstein suit side by side should make for a funny picture.
More like a Lexus and Corolla I think it would be an interesting ONE ON ONE game though. Rocket River
I think you're underselling McHale a bit. His career numbers, already great, would have been absolutely extraordinary if he didn't play with Bird or Parish. At least as good as Karl Malone's. Rebounding particularly.
Both are terrifically crafty offensive players with similar offensive games. Both have really good scoop shots. McHale had those freakishly long arms that made his little up and under scoop shots a little more deadly than Scola's. But McHale was far superior on defense where there is just no comparison.
It’s easy to sum it up if you’re just talking about defense. We’re sitting here, and I’m supposed to be the franchise player, and we’re talking about defense. I mean listen, we’re sitting here talking about defense, not a game, not a game, not a game, but we’re talking about defense. Not the game that I go out there and die for and play every game like it’s my last but we’re talking about defense man. How silly is that? … Now I know that I’m supposed to lead by example and all that but I’m not shoving that aside like it don’t mean anything. I know it’s important, I honestly do but we’re talking about defense. We’re talking about defense man. We’re talking about defense. We’re talking about defense. We’re not talking about the game. We’re talking about defense. When you come to the arena, and you see me play, you’ve seen me play right, you’ve seen me give everything I’ve got, but we’re talking about defense right now. … Hey I hear you, it’s funny to me too, hey it’s strange to me too but we’re talking about defense man, we’re not even talking about the game, when it actually matters, we’re talking about defense.
McHale was everything Scola was with both hands, about 6 inches more reach, and defensive and passing ability. Other than that, they are about the same.
