One thing I hope the new coach does is bring back the DEFENSE that has been lost by the Rockets.

    Defense wins championships.

Look at the top 10 nba teams in terms of ppg allowed, 9 of them made the playoffs and only the bucks did not because of their atrocious offense.

Compared to the top 10 ppg teams in the nba (rockets were 3rd), only 6 out of the 10 teams made the Playoffs.

    Bring back the D!

I don't think there's one coach in the NBA that abandons defense. You just got to have the players and rockets back court are not those players.

Our bad defense had everything to do with not having Yao Ming. When will fans understand this?

Rockets have defense with 7 fters.
Rockets lose 7 fters, and defense went down.
    hmmm....

    Give Yao bionic legs.
    Give Hayes a step ladder.

    Problem solved.

hell of a lot better than our no D team did.

they do need another scorer, but to say they did poorly because they played too much defense is idiotic

You're saying this like it's being ignored? I'm pretty sure they're trying to get back on track defensively, but it's not going to happen before the playoffs are over.

Don't worry because, to paraphrase the Go-Go's:

    WE GOT THABEET!

    and Yao.

Damn good teams with dominant players win championships.

As long as the Rockets don't have at least one, better two dominant players, they don't need to worry about winning championships, but rather about acquiring that type of players.

And playing great team defense with a guy like Kevin Martin is like playing great team defense with Steve Nash: not possible.

    LOL.

We had better defenders on the bench. If RA had wanted to, he could have played Bud and AB less.

I think it would be wonderful if the Rox would get back to defense this year.

    Let's see here

    top 5 defense + 2 superstar/star = multiple 1st round exits
horrible defense + no star = .500 record

Seems to me defense might just be a bit overrated.

Look, what improves defense is better interior defender and/or having star player(s) so your role players can concentrate on defense. Not some magical coaching philosophy. If that's all it takes, then the warriors these past years would've just needed JVG/Mike Brown type to be perpetual championship contenders.

You can choose to believe that.

But an offense built around 1 player going ISO makes that said defense appear a whole lot better than it really is. C'mon...how many crunch time PnR's did we see? Zippo.

But the defensive guru himself...Jeff Van Gundy...said it best in CHI-MIA Game 4. And I quote...

"You can't be an elite NBA team and put a player on the floor that the other team doesn't have to guard".

The problem with the flat-out "Defense wins championships" bunk is that it fails to recognize the importance of players with skills on both ends of the court. And especially transition O.

The Bulls ran a flawed offense that made MIA look better than it is. I strongly suspect the Mavs will take advantage of the fact they have more players that can create offense on their own. Essentially, the Mavs are an offensive team that learned to play D. That is what now wins NBA Championships.

Got to be good at both O and D.

It has nothing to do with individual talent, Bogans is just as bad offensively as Stevenson or Fisher the last few years. Their offense schemes are just awful.

But ya, usually the teams with better defense win, this is just a fact. It's because defense is consistent and offense may not be.

And yet not enough offense to get past the Heat
