Hehe, from the looks of things, Morey is not obsessive about conditioning. Once again, my job is to ensure that he sees the effect of his decisions.
Cant believe the tasteless jokes toward a man's real-life situations...This man is hurting inside for his fellow brethren....Listen here bro, you tell your friend "if losing your kids is worth it, then I cant be partners with you no more....No more late night rub downs or late night talks expressing your feelings"......Both of yall sound a lil DL'ish
That's probably about all you can do. I hope it works out. I hate it when kids are involved in this kind of selfish nonsense. Personally, I would have a hard time staying friends with someone that out-of-touch.
rhadamanthus- "I have plenty of things I'm passionate about. They still take the backburner to my kids and my wife. Because that's absolutely the correct order of priorities." /thread true words bro. true words.
Just out of curiosity, what type of triathlon is the OP talking about? An iron man? Olympic? There's a huge difference.
I would probably scale back my training. Like I posted earlier, no matter what the hobby is, it's all about having your priorities straight. When you get into triathlons, you'll find that the majority of people are just regular working people with families, some young, some old. Most are able to do races with little affect on their personal lives at home. So to read that a person is letting it completely change his life and family makes me believe that it has more to do with your buddy's outlook on his family than triathlons specifically.
No no, it's about distance. Olympic Tri you run roughly 7 miles. Iron Man you run 26 miles. Similar difference in the swimming and biking distance.

20 years from now, he'll be unable to compete or that passion will be gone. His kids will still hate him though.
I have a friend (female) who is in a similar situation. She's been training for a couple of years and has essentially punted on her family. I suspect my across-the-street neighbor is also in this group as she is constantly out running and buying the most expensive running gear while her kids are just this side of feral and seem to never get new clothes. Both of the husbands are really weak guys. I suspect all these folks are running away from something rather than for something.
There is an "Olympic" distance for triathlons. It includes a 1500M swim, 24 mile bike, and 10K run. raj - If you're buddy just completed the Ironman this past weekend, he should now have tons of time to tend to whatever he was neglecting. If he's still out and about not spending time with his family, then I think it's safe to say he just doesn't want to spend time with them.
Go ahead and talk to him, but tread carefully. There's a lot more variables in a marriage relationship other than time spent training for triathlons. There's a whole host of baggage. And, you're probably not in a real position to solve it. The most you can hope to do it to nudge him toward wanting to do something to fix it.
