Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch! John Coltrane - Meditations Although I have really gotten into Sun Ra and the Cecil Taylor album I listened to recently was out there as is some of Ornette Coleman's stuff - the Coltrane album I am listening to now will test your ears and fortitude - very powerful but noisy and loud stuff!
i'm digging it. never heard of them until acl acts were announced and checked them out due to leroy's praise.
Happened upon them several years back at the Engine Room and loved it. Bough the EP "I Think I've Found It" at the show and have been a fan since. Love that album and they sound good live. Guy has a great voice, imo. Kinda Dulli / Lennon.
Blindfaith The Band - Music from Big Pink Traffic - Low Spark of High Heeled Boys Cat Stevens - Teaser and the Firecat Cat Stevens - Tea for the Tillerman Bruce Cockburn - Dancing in the Dragon Jaws
caught them at walters two years ago (i think)... tremendous show. i'd been listening to them for a few months so i was pretty pumped to see them. haven't really given the new(er) album a decent spin though. i've been ragging out the new black lips album (got me a copy last week :grin and damn... loving the **** out of it! caught them at fitz a few weeks ago and it was GNAR GNAR. so gnar in fact i bought two tickets to see them at the bowery ballroom in nyc at the end of july. they may be my favorite band touring right now. was listening to the new tapes 'n tapes earlier today... not bad. i'm not particularly familiar w their stuff except for their song "crazy 8's" which is awesome. i recently scored a treasure trove of 2011 releases and will be making my way through that soon. i've already spun a few tracks from: gang gang dance foster the people bon iver crystal stilts deerhoof garage a trois thee oh sees mmj panda bear and a few others.
Sonny Sharrock - Ask the Ages Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda

They are going to be on Storytellers (VH1 show) this Friday. I'm going to check it out then decide whether or not to pick up the album.
Albert Ayler - Spiritual Unity Anthony Braxton - For Alto Cecil Taylor - Conquistador! Got about 9 more key free jazz/avant-garde jazz albums to listen to before I pick back up to soul and some of the other weird artists I like to listen to.
Just listened. Better than Narrow Stairs, but still a long way from Plans and a very very long way from anything earlier. IMO.
It's most definitely better than Narrow Stairs, and I feel better than Plans though. This album is much more upbeat. Underneath the Sycamore is one of the best tracks they have released spanning any of their albums, imo. <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/hwfLISTfbLk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
