http://blog.chron.com/sportsjustice...cidentally-im-going-to-say-hes-the-right-guy/ Another voice supporting Kevin McHale. .
Me thinks that Richie had a deadline to get an article done, and he figured the verbal garbage he spewed was good enough. Also, I notice that he didn't explain what happened to his claim 2 weeks ago that the Rockets were down to two candidates.
Justice probably got told that McHale announcement is coming soon. Morey asks Justice to write an early article to garner more fan support for McHale before the announcement.
From Rick Adelman to...Kevin McHale? Man, Rockets are not morons but in this situation they sure look like it.
I quite frankly think McHale is a great choice by Morey. McHale is not a great coach by any means, record-wise. He is definitely not a highly-regarded coach around the league, or else he would have been hired ages ago. McHale is HOF player, and therefore he will be a great draw with players and free-agents. He is not very good at winning. Therefore he will get us quality draft picks that will actually be much better than the 14th picks we are getting constantly under Adelman. If we hired Phil Jackson, and he takes us to, say, 8th seed. Does that really have any benefits at all over getting a top 5 pick? NO, NOT AT ALL. So in summary, McHale is a great choice because -He will come cheap as he is desperate at a coaching gig. -He sucks at coaching so he will win us draft picks -He is willing to play and develop young players, which is much better than playing Scola and Martin every game 35 mins a game. -He has a big reputation which will come in great when it comes to recognition and marketing. I couldn't fathom why anyone would think Lawrence Frank and Dwane Casey would be ANY better. All they would do is replicate what Adelman did and get us the 12th pick instead of the 2nd pick. Isn't that why we got rid of Adelman in the first place?
Morey is thinking long-term instead of a sweet bite at the biscuit that could be a big buffet of chocolate down the road.
McHale, if paired with a decent lead assistant like Finch, seems like a good choice. He will most likely be patient and hard working with the younger players which helps the Rockets in their current position. His adjustment will be eased by having a solid/potential all-star pg in Lowry. He is also not as established within the coaching ranks so he will probably be more flexible and receptive to new ideas and player rotations. He doesn't need to work hard to gain the players respect because having won several championships as a player. He seems to be very camera friendly. Granted, my decision is probably influenced by the fact that he has been on Inside The NBA before, but for what it's worth he seemed to do a decent job. Finally, the Rockets are in a state of transition. Until they find the right player(s), they can't assume the need for a proven coach. Just as they need to be creative in making roster improvements, they need to think outside of the box when searching for a coach. When you end up with the 14th pick 2 years in a row, it becomes much trickier to land a potential super/all-star. I think this hire is gonna work out just fine =)
McHale is our Phil Jackson hire. PJ's value was in how he motivated his players, manipulated his officials, and infuriated his opponents with all his psychological manipulation. Phil knew enough X's and O's, just like Kevin does, but he let his assistants do the bulk of the dirty work of teaching the players the system and coaching players on their skillsets. Big Chief Triangle just put all the stuff together, used his assistant coaches input to make adjustments and call a few plays, and run the big show. McHale wouldn't surprise me anymore. I was surprised at first. But thinking it through, this has to be the Rockets reasoning. McHale is effervescent. He is a leader. He is charismatic. And he's a former player. He will have the player's respect, even TWill's. And he will be able to personally work with our bigs both defensively and offensively. He was a very, very good two-way player. Finch and Lucas hired as assistants on his staff, maybe another assistant. That's a good staff. Let's go.
/thread, in post #2. What a great switch. Turning wine into muddy water. Adelman --> Freaking McHale. Maybe we'll sign Joe Smith now. (*smashes laptop*)
i like the idea of him being the motivator, and hiring an offensive or defensive coordinator (or both). i think the rockets like him most for this aspect coupled with the fact that he would make a great skills coach for our young bigs. my only problem with this plan... who would those assistants be that are supposed to carry the strategic load?
Do you work for the Rockets' front office or something? Phil Jackson? Of the glowing description you list, I can only agree that he and Phil are both former players (as was Adelman, for what it's worth, which is nothing at this point.) I thought we wanted to go new and innovative? If McHale has 1/10 of Jackson's savvy, I'll be shocked, but he does have gangly arms that look like they were attached to his torso incorrectly. Maybe that's the key to being a hall of fame coach.
The fact that McHale can tutor the rockets young frontcout in Thabeet, Patterson and Hill (all lottery picks) is intriguing.
exactly. intriguing enough to let him work with them for a couple years while the team plays the lotto and hopes to draft a franchise player
Hopefully because of his effervescent personality, he will be more effective in terms of getting younger players to buy in to team concepts. I also hope that with his personality, he wont be as likely to put young guys in the doghouse.
