If it is McHale, then Morey gets what he wanted all along. He's going to put his hand chosen successor as he was going to do with Rick Adelman... Apparently, he has a guy ready to take over as coach, just needs a little bit of seasoning... My money is on McHale being the next head coach, and one of his assistants the hand chosen successor of Morey and Alexander....
Bingo! McHale will be "head coach" but more of a gm direct line where coach and gm are on same page with personnel decisions. I think they will have a top level coaching staff with Chris Finch as lead assistant/ coach in waiting. McHale would help coach and develop our young bigs. (Thabeet,Hill,Patterson)
Lmao. U idiots have to be working PR for the Rockets. What credentials do any of these losers have that Adelman didn't? What "direction" can Lawrence Frank lead us that Adelman couldn't? Lol. All the excuses aside, the organization just wanted a coach they could control. Morey wanted a bigger role in player rotations and he'll definitely get that when we win 20 games next year. Funny, we're getting cheaper at a time teams are spending $$$.
I'm against McHale. What kind of meaningful coaching experience does he have? He plied most of his years as GM of an awful awful franchise and made so many mistakes that his owner basically forced him into the coaching role in the exact same way that New Orleans' old owner made his GM walk the proverbial plank. It was like, "OK smart guy, if you think our coach is not using the players you've acquired properly, YOU show me how they were meant to be used." And of course none of that ever worked out. Whoever thinks McHale will teach this team better defense is nuts. Like every other great player in decades past, it will be difficult for McHale to impart his methods of effectiveness to his players because frankly he had more skill than they did and did not have to think things through as meticulously when he was a star. That's why it's always the NBA role players that make the best coaches; they maximized their talents and can tell other players how they managed to do that.
If we can't get JVG, I'd settle for McHale. I like McHale because he has failed as GM and coach, the chances are good he won't fail again. Danny Ainge and Larry Bird did pretty good with management and coaching, so I think McHale will get his due. He will get to work with Yao and other big men, importantly, recruiting FAs. If it ain't McHale, I'm just looking forward to this upcoming season.
The Bill Finch story within the story here is the most intriguing part. Finch has shown to be hugely successful both overseas and in the NBADL, so its now pretty much understood that at some point in the next few years he will be the coach of the Rockets. At this point I say just give him the job now, but I understand them wanting him to have assistant coaching experience. So I wouldnt get too worked up with whoever they hire because we all know who the future coach of the Rockets really is.
1- JVG is not even a candidate at this point 2- I wouldn't count on McHale being able to work with Yao as a "positive." Not that it's a negative, but with Yao's status it's silly to even mention that.
Feigen: There might be a tendency to believe the Rockets indecision on the coaching position indicates Dallas’ Dwane Casey is the favorite among the finalists. Kevin McHale and Lawrence Frank are available now. Casey is not. If the Rockets keep waiting, they could be waiting for Casey. That might eventually true, but they have not aimed for a decision this week. Morey is going back and forth between interviews with coaches and draft prospects. Leslie Alexander is out of the country. If the Rockets had to make a decision now, they probably could. And they could certainly get every thought needed from the owner regardless of where he is, assuming he is not off climbing Kilimanjaro. But for now, it is still a three-coach race.
That source has a one in three chance of being correct ... FTW. If the Finch substory is correct, I do not see why the Rockets just do not go ahead and hire him. What Finch lacks can be made up via judicious hiring of assistants.
WojYahooNBA: After a strong final push in the interview process, Kevin McHale has emerged as the frontrunner for Rockets coaching job, sources tell Y!
If Kevin McHale is the head coach, are we still going to need Carroll Dawson's services as a big man skills coach?
Certainly get that feeling, not happy but not devasted either. McHale did an okay job coaching the Wolves but nothing great, so very blah. I also enjoy him as a color guy on TNT/NBA TV so I'd miss him there.
I think he would be great teaching our young bigs, not sure he has much to offer as far as x's and o's.
