Jewish campaign donors are already turning their back toward Obama. And kudos to President Obama for putting justice, fairness, and peace ahead of political expediency.
obama is going to get every bit out of the good will from killing bin laden that he can and good for him.
1967 borders with negotiated land swaps is where both sides were at 12 years ago. Even if the US can convince the current Israeli leaders to agree to it, there's still the issue of Jerusalem and right of return that needs to be settled.
I do not purport to be an expert in Mideast affairs, but it appears likely to me that Obama is sowing the seeds of war. As Dory Gold has pointed out, if Israel accepts the 1967 boundaries, the Jewist state is only eight miles wide at its narrowest. This leaves Israel vulnerable, no begging, for an attack by those who do not believe Israel has a right to exist. Obama has gone where no President has gone before, proving once again that his inexperience is downright dangerous. I wonder how long it will be, if this suggestion is accepted, before Muslims desecrate the Wailing Wall and other Jewish/Christian sites as they have in other parts of the world where non-Muslim cultural sites were deemed offensive to Muslims.
Good job, AP. Thanks for blatantly distorting what he said. Where did Obama say that it's pre-Six Day War borders that Israel has to go back to? 1967 borders means after the war, which is not a whole lot different from what we've been saying all this time under Bush or Clinton.
Israel deserves it for the settlement bulls*** they put the Obama administration on. Hopefully this shifts America closer to a balanced Middle East policy. You know, one that doesn't involve vetoing everything Israel-related in the UN, or giving massive amounts of aid to torturing, repressive dictators like Mubarak or King Abdullah of Jordan based on acceptance of a country their people hate. Hey, don't forget about Israeli military aid that goes unexamined, while we cut funding for the Peace Corps and food aid! tough on israel. bulls***. the amount of Jewish voters and money will never allow this, but I think Americans should examine how copious amounts of tax money are going to an unruly child that is quickly becoming the largest inducement to terrorism. The West owns Israel, not vice versa. Israel owes its' continued existence to the Western taxpayer and arms firms. Yet they have the audacity to bring this settlement crap, shoot on non-violent Palestinian protesters trying to cross their border, and among other things, cooperate with China militarily and sell them arms technology! It's about high time a Western leader set out to show that the West isn't just going to stand there and take it. you want tough on Israel? cut all military aid to Egypt, Jordan, and Israel. see how long they go pissing people off without American taxpayers subsidizing the country.
You are pushing the nuclear button by proxy. Israel has enough nuclear weapons to not just defend itself but destroy all of its enemies all at once. Of course, treaties get honored and the world is suddenly at war. If the viability of the Israeli nation is threatened, they have the wherewithall and the will to push all the wrong buttons. There won't be time for an Obama "oops."
Shove American nukes at Israel's face if they threaten such stupidity, assure mutually assured destruction. Rinse and repeat. Of course, American policy with Israel, and the ironic disposition towards "nuclear non-proliferation" is what got us into this mess in the first place, wasn't it?
What obvious reasons? Let's say if Pakistan went rogue on us, you would object to shoving nukes at their face? Did you support the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound? If yes, is that not pushing the nuclear button by proxy, by invading the sovereignty of a nation with nuclear capability? If the United States has the courage to do that, it better have the courage to do such a passive move as withholding aid to Israel, Egypt, Jordan and yes, Pakistan itself. It would be good for the books, and disciplining the unruly children of the Middle East. If Isreali officials threatened to nuke their enemies, I would consider it a massive failure if no Western power intervened.
Your sane view of the world apparently encompasses the point that if the United States withdraws military aid from Israel, somehow the IDF, which has already been propped up ad nauseam anyways and is largely capable of defending its' own borders at least, will collapse, and Arab nations will gleefully descend upon Israel and pillage and sacrilege the Wailing Wall and Christian sites, despite the fact that they had 1000 years or so to do so already and never have, and despite the fact that Islamic texts revere Jesus and as Abrahamic faiths, the holy sites of one religion are very sacred to the other. You seem to refer to the Taliban's explosion of the Buddhas---which was a tragedy, but was committed by an extremist group against a non-Abarhamic site. But where oh where are the mass sacrileges of Christian and Jewish sites? Pray do tell me of the organized Arab campaigns to destroy Christian sites, especially as they co-live with Coptics and Catholics in the region? Don't forget your sain view that based on this scenario, Israel will go BERSERKER STYLE, and nuke all the poor bastards, because somehow the withdrawal of American military aid will cripple every facet of the IDF, and destroy the mental faculties of every Israeli general. mhmm just responding to insanity with insanity. Threaten nukes on Israel if Israel were to threaten nukes on the world.
Look, I'm a proponent of Israel existing, just not a proponent of it existing unconditionally. If you're going to sell arms technology to my military rival and establish illegal settlements against my will, why should I finance and support you unconditionally? Israel has become America's spoiled little child. Other nations have noted it as well. It's about time a Western leader got closer to rebuking Israel for its' bad behavior. Tough love for Israel, especially with regards to military aid, would be nice to see. Not that it'll happen, since even reviewing Israeli aid seems to be tinged with controversy, but it's a nice thought given how America doesn't happen to be running the biggest surplus these days, and how this money seems to be going to waste.
