I've seen this reported before...as far back as the late-90's. This is a 22 year study, though. http://www.independent.ie/health/latest-news/coffee-cuts-risk-of-cancer-2650078.html Coffee 'cuts risk of cancer' By John von Radowitz in London Wednesday May 18 2011 Men who drink a lot of coffee dramatically cut their risk of lethal prostate cancer, a study has shown. Consuming six or more cups of coffee daily was associated with a 20pc reduced risk of the disease. Men who drank the most coffee were 60pc less likely to develop aggressive cancer that causes death or spreads to the bones. Even relatively small amounts of coffee -- one to three cups per day -- lowered the risk of lethal prostate cancer by 30pc. The link appears to be unconnected with caffeine, since it made no difference whether participants drank caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee. Scientists believe it may be due to antioxidants and plant chemicals in coffee that are known to have health benefits, including combating inflammation and regulating insulin. The study involved almost 45,000 US men working in health professions who reported their coffee consumption every four years from 1986 to 2008. During this period 5,035 of the men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, including 642 fatal or "metastatic" cases where tumours spread to different parts of the body.
6 cups a day is pretty crazy, but I do drink about 2-3. I like studies that back up my morning enjoyment of coffee
I've also read about this for years. I'm assuming they're talking about 6, 8oz cups, which most of us probably have more covered than we might realize: my standard coffee mug easily holds 2+ cups, and I drink 2-3 of those per day.
It doesn't "give you" these things. You need to have a pretty serious preexisting condition for coffee to be of any danger. Despite the conventional wisdom, there are a zillion studies that say there is no link between coffee and it causing hypertension. The benefits far outweigh the risks for 99.99999% of people.
Coffee is an acquired taste. I like the smell of it, but the taste of it sucks, and drinking it black would almost make me vomit because of the acidity of it. Chocolate (be it dark or milk), on the other hand, if you don't like that... then you have no soul.
true, but prostate cancer is the #1 cancer in men. Plus, you don't want to lose the ability to pop a chub
There are better alternative. They are call fruits and vegetables. If you're going to be lazy and think drowning yourself in coffee is the only and best way to fight Prostate Cancer. If you don't even have Prostate Cancer what's the point of drowning yourself in coffee?
I used to only get sick when I drank black coffee. Now I get sick after drinking any coffee. I miss it. Oh well at least I don't have a prostate!
There are always shiny new studies popping up about how "Doing _____ can decrease the risk for _____!" when really all they need to say is "Eat some damn vegetables." But, people don't want to hear that. It's the world we live in.
No one is suggesting you shouldn't eat fruits and veggies. You absolutely should. Also, if you consume coffee, it prevents prostate cancer. Ummmmm..how about because you don't want to GET prostate cancer?? Seems like a good reason. I drink a few cups a day. Glad to know that there's a benefit to it aside from the fact I enjoy coffee.
The same thing they said about cell phone. They say a little big of radiation fight cancer by using the cell phone. I find that a very false encouragement.
Because coffee is good for me, helps me wake up, stay focused, and tastes good? No on claimed it was the "only and best way" to fight prostate cancer.
