    [rquoter]Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wants a statue, feels slighted

    By Eric Freeman

It has also gotten more people talking about which retired stars deserve statues. Public outcry generally did not point towards the Lakers giving Kareem Abdul-Jabbar a statue outside of Staples Center. But the former Lakers great feels slighted anyway. From Steve Greenberg of Sporting News (via ESPN Los Angeles):

"I don't understand (it). It's either an oversight or they're taking me for granted. I'm not going to try to read people's minds, but it doesn't make me happy. It's definitely a slight. I feel slighted."[/rquoter]

As a Muslim, should he be getting offended by not having a statue of himself?

It's not about him getting offended but I don't know why he would want one in the first place since he is muslim

Very humble of a man to complain about not getting a statue of themselves.

I don't care how great you were...it's not like a statue is mandatory to confirm your greatness.

I don't think he cares as he's starred in a beer commerical (coors i think?) before. But regardless of religion, if Kareem wants a statue, he's one of those players that are deserving imo.

His religion, what he believes, is between him and God and we are nobody to judge.

That being said, he always seemed pretty humble, this is quite surprising. Crazy how he starts publicly talking about it almost 20 years after retiring.

I hope they put up a statue of Bruce Lee just to spite him.

Not really. There were stories about him being a douche. He's before the time of internet, so less scrutinized by the media.

If you ask Hakeem Olajuwon, it's against the rules of Islam to have a statue of oneself. I guess Kareem doesn't agree with this.

This statue thing is getting out of hand. It used to be that getting your jersey retired was a great honor. Now, stars need a statue in order to feel appreciated?

Yeah. Different ways of viewing it.

Hakeem views a statue as an idol. I believe that during the era of Abraham, there were people who worshiped statues which is blasphemous in the eyes of God. Idolatry is forbidden by all 3 of the monotheistic religions, not just Islam.

Kareem probably views a statue similar to how most athletes view it, something to honor their legacy, not an idol which people are worshiping.

    this.

Plus, I'm sorry, but despite Kareem being pretty graceful, his statue would look pretty dorky with bronze goggles on.

Olajuwon viewed a statue of himself as being in conflict with being a Muslim.

Another Muslim wants a statue of himself.

    That is why.

I still think its a silly question. there are over a billion muslims, its not like some small cult that you expect all to stick to the tenants of their beliefs. i see a bunch of muslims drinking who cares. you could do the same thing with christians and some obscure beliefs.
