um ...fyi: Frank puts a priority on defense. have no idea why people on this board are saying otherwise.
Having good one-on-one defenders makes it easier to play good team defense. You wont have to double team and rotate back as much. All the teams you mentioned, San Antonio, Boston, and Detroit had one major thing in common... They all had a very good (and tall) defender around the paint. If we get one of those you will see our defensive stats go up. I understand about staying on your man and making them shoot contested jumpers. If they know there is someone at the rim to block shots, they will usually try to get off jumpers instead of driving. Our guys made an effort to stay in front of their men. In the NBA though you can't stay in front of most of these guys for very long. That's just a fact. No amount of effort will help you there. I feel like they respected rick and played hard for him. Maybe you just feel they didn't. We both have our opinions.
and if the guy that is rotating over to help is only 6'5 or 6'8 and non-athletic what can they really do? oh, take a charge.
i am not sure what you try to prove. generally speaking, # of possessions are equal btw two teams. that's the way bball was designed. you score and give ball back to your opponent. you score, other team will score too. what make you think other team will not score instead throw ball away or brick ball all the time?
why not? if you anticipate and know your position and where you should be. that is called defense focus. chuck has been doing it very well.
but it doesn't give you an excuse not to focus on defense if you don't have one. positioning, anticipating, and focusing are keys to a good team defense.
What "offense oriented teams" are you talking about? D'Antonio's? Nellie's? You are mistaking uptempo offense with good offense. The Suns have been a very efficient offensive team not because of the coach but because of Nash. Nellie's Warriors teams were never very efficient because he didn't have a guy like Nash. (BTW, his Dallas teams were good when he had Nash and Dirk.) Adelman's offense is nothing like that. It's not based on fast tempo, although it does exploit fastbreak points whenever possible. It's based on good movement, good read, good passing, and good shooting. It is efficient in a half court set as well as in a running game. The Showtimes Lakers in the '80s were great offensive teams, coached by none other than the Great Disciplinary Pat Riley. You can't find anyone more old school than Riley. If only girnd-it-out so-called "old school" teams could win championships, those Riley teams would never have made it big.
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo No. No. No. No. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONONONONONONONO.
Stein - Mchale, Casey to get 2nd interview also They're all getting second interviews. Not sure if it's been done yet with Casey, Stein contradicts himself here sort of.
Have you ever played bball before? Just asking not trying to talk trash. If a small guy rotates over the offense will not be worried about him defending the shot. It is very difficult to get over everytime and get in position for a charge. If that is your best defense, you will get smoked. Offensive players will just stop and pull up right over the top of that small rotating defender EVERY TIME! You gotta have some size around the rim to be a good defensive team. No way around that in the NBA. Maybe in your church league or rec league at the Y you can get by with a small team. So whomever the new coach is will need size to 'coach up' to commit to playing D. Just having what we have now, NO COACH could make them better defensively.
If defense was all it was cracked up to be, the Rockets should have gone down the tubes once they traded Battier. They didn't and actually played better as evidenced by their record. Contrary to popular belief, "defense" does not win championshps. Championships are won by teams that A) do not have glaring offensive holes in the starting 5 and B) get every player on the team to buy into playing solid team D to the best of their physical ability. Beyond that, a shot-blocking C allows perimeter players to gamble more often and cover for normal rotational mistakes. The %age of NBA Championship team with a shot blocking presence is too high to be ignored. As far as Lawrence Frank...I'm thinking a second-tier Jeff Van Gundy with even less of an understanding of offense.
I quit reading after your first stanza.. First, check our schedule AND playoff basketball is not the same as regular season basketball. Defense wins championships, and you should check the last few winners before you try and say otherwise.
