Waiting on the plethora of excuses for Morey's claim the Heat were a 45 win team with the Big 3. Maybe Dampier made the difference? Was it Bibby? I can't see any team beating the Heat this year.
If Morey said this then I want a new GM. First I need the quote and I need to know the the actual context of what he said. IIRC he did say this.
http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/17366/when-daryl-morey-met-chris-bosh When Daryl Morey met Chris Bosh July, 1, 2010 Jul 19:57AM ETEmail Print Comments6 By Henry Abbott Archive Chris Bosh has long been the Rockets' dream summer acquisition, and they went to a ton of trouble to be ready to impress him as the clock turned midnight. In preparation they had fired up three Toyota Tundras full of fans, and Jason Friedman, intrepid team blogger, had them drive to Florida. Their best intelligence was that Bosh would be there on the big night. Morey would catch a plane to join them at the last minute, then he'd kind of be the grand marshal of a fan parade that would engulf Bosh in a tidal wave of free-agent love. That was the idea. So over the last few days, the Toyotas trundled across the country, from Houston to Miami. They managed to get there in time for the big meeting. Only ... at the last minute, Morey discovered that Bosh was in fact -- surprise! -- in Dallas. The fan caravan was out of the mix. Morey, however, was very much in. He managed to finagle the meeting with Bosh. Afterward, Morey called Friedman (who was presumably enjoying his unbelievably decorative South Beach hotel room) to report on the meeting with Bosh: Using a personalized Chris Bosh iPad as part of his presentation, Morey showed the 6-10 Texas-native video testimonials from the likes of Yao Ming, Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler and Elvin Hayes. He also focused on the Rockets’ incredible depth and tremendous supporting cast -- perhaps the two key components of Houston’s pitch which sets it apart from the rest of the teams playing the free agent field. In talking to Morey after the fact, it was clear he felt positively about both the meeting and the Rockets’ chances going forward. You can’t ask for a much better start to the free agent frenzy than that. The fancy iPad was hardly Morey's only high-tech trick. He also brought some of the fancypants hoops analysis he's famous for. Chad Ford has more details about Morey's pitch, including Morey's analysis whereby with Yao and Bosh, the Rockets could be a 60-win team, whereas a few superstars and some minimum contracts would only get Bosh 45 wins or so. To land Bosh, the Rockets would first need Bosh to fall in love with the idea, and then they'd have to get the Raptors to agree to a sign-and-trade. There's plenty of work to be done, but it sounds like the first meeting ended on target, even if the first fan free-agent caravan missed by about 1,300 miles.
Judging by the date of the article, I think this was before the public LBJ "Decision" to go to the Heat.
Pretty bad call on Morey's part. I'm assuming that HIS assumption included LBJ, Wade, Bosh, and pure garbage around them.
The Heat got solid veterans to step in and play all the necessary roles. I'm assuming that's not what Morey had in mind when he said "some minimum contracts". Plus he was clearly painting the worst picture possible for Bosh, and rightly so.

Dude one of the best scenes in all of movie history. I have quoted that scene for the last 25 years. Respect!
i'd love to know if that really included lebron because say what you want about "advanced" stats, but your level of production can usually come pretty close to predicting how much you will win/have won and just looking at something like PER, the heat players performed pretty much as expected. lebron and wade dominated PER (#1 and #3 in the league), chris bosh's PER probably was right about where you would think given his previous PER and the fact he would be getting fewer touches, and i would guess morey was assuming "replacement" level players put around them (which is about an 11 PER), and that's about exactly what their role players gave them. they certainly didn't massively outperform in terms of PER (since all of the big 3 had lower PER's when not being the only star on their team) to explain a 61-45 differential (61 being miami's expected wins for the season), while adding lebron would certainly explain a 61-45 differential. if you looked at something like Win Shares, lebron/wade/bosh had 41 WS last season (39 this year). to get only 4 more wins you would have to assume that they really got about 9 of the absolute worst players in the league, which i guess is possible to assume but just wouldn't be reasonable. granted, the heat's role players do appear to have a relative Win Shares to PER outperformance (nearly replacement level PER but almost average level WS/48) that i assume is partly due to the team component of defensive win shares (although even offensive win shares is about 80% of average), but still i'd think even a WS prediction would have to have been in the 50's if they thought lebron was on the team. maybe someone like durvasa could shed more light on it.
where were you last offseason? this is a very common known statement of Moreys.. when Daryl went to Boshs house, he gave him an ipad and pitched to him that the Heat is only a 45 win team.. its a known fact, try google it may pull it up
The Rockets' pitch to Bosh July, 1, 2010 Jul 11:33AM ETEmail Print Comments136 By Chad Ford Archive Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey met with Chris Bosh in Dallas on Thursday morning according to a tweet by Morey. "Just finished meeting with @chrisbosh -- great player & person. He is about winning so I focused on how w/Houston he can win a championship." The Rockets have been targeting Bosh for months. Their pitch to Bosh is pretty straightforward. They believe he is a perfect fit with the existing talent they have on their roster and they can offer Bosh a return home to Texas. The Rockets will also stress that if Bosh joins the Rockets, they're likely a 60-win team. If he forms a triumvirate with LeBron James and Dwyane Wade in Miami, the Rockets believe the team won't have enough supporting talent to support a championship team. The Rockets believe such a pairing would produce a 45-win team. To land Bosh, the Rockets would have to work a sign-and-trade with the Raptors. The team could offer a players like Jordan Hill, Aaron Brooks and the expiring contracts of Jared Jeffries and David Andersen for Bosh. The also have restricted free agent Luis Scola that they could offer in a sign-and-trade. The Rockets also have the right to swap picks w/Knicks in 2011 and own a protected Knicks pick in 2012. In other words, they have a ton of assets The Rockets, at this point, remain a long shot to get Bosh. Several sources believe that the Heat are in the lead to sign Bosh.
iirc, Morey's claim was if all 3 signed for the max, giving Miami little options to sign other players. But since James and Bosh were both traded instead, Miami was capable of then signing others players beyond the bare minimum using the MLE.
That's funny, because I'm pretty sure Morey was publicly saying on the radio that Miami had a fantastic team and they were contenders at the start of the season. Isn't it possible that Chad Ford didn't report it correctly (there is no quote, after all), that the Rockets were putting out false information, or even that they just projected a worst-case scenario as far as the supporting cast goes?
Okay so during a pitch to Bosh, he told Bosh that the team wouldn't win if Bosh signed there? WTF do you expect him to say? Go to Miami and not Houston since Miami would win?
