I have a friend who got accepted into one of the top university in Canada (University of Waterloo for Computer Science co-op) with an average of 95%.

The problem is that her mom believes that she would end up with $100,000 + of debts after graduation. She really wants to go to UW and even made a chart to show the total estimated debts(approx. $22,000) after she has graduated from UW.
And here is another chart made by a student who got accepted into the same program.

However, her mom won't believe her and ask her to go to University of Toronto or even Community College because it's closer from home and with has less debts. Needless to say, her relationship with her parents isn't great and she doesn't want to live there for another 4-5 years.

So are there any other ways for her to convince her mom?

Here is her thread on this issue, if you guys are interested.

    Thanks ClutchFans:)

And in case you guys don't know, University of Waterloo is regarded as one of the best university for Computer Science, with the best co-op/internship program in Canada.

Don't they have federal loans for schooling in Canada?

Anyways her mom is an idiot. A student should go to the best possible school they can get into. If the CS degree from Waterloo is the best one in Canada, it will set her apart from her competition when it comes to future job prospects.

By any chance, did the mom not go to university?

Have her borrow the money herself. She's an adult. End of story.

Even $22000 of debt can be a lot of money. The mom brings up a good point on debt load which many students just neglect. What is the daughter planning to major in? I would use this as a selling point if it's possible.

I think this should be a major factor in considerations - however, it also sounds like the Mom is picking points not to just be practical, but because she doesn't want her daughter to move away. Eventually, we all have to do things on our own whether our parents like it or not. We explain our actions to them and hope they understand one day. She's an adult - she should start making decisions like one.

There probably aren't, and I think you know that but are just venting. Kids without trust funds are fully dependent on their parents for college: at least in the States even if they're getting the loans or grants themselves, the bank and financial aid office will still ask for the parents' financials. So if they refuse to cooperate, your girl is screwed.

My only advice would be to surreptitiously swipe the mom's tax returns, maybe by getting admitted to Univ of Toronto, have mom provide the info for that and just keep the copies to remit to Waterloo. If she can't, then she will just have to tough it out at community college or U. Toronto, while working, until she can get enough to pay for Waterloo.

There might be some Canadian Department of Labor statistics that show the potential earnings for computer science grads that may help daughter compare income to the possible debt to show mom and convince her of the benefits of graduating from Waterloo. But barring that, homegirl probably doesn't have any recourse: strategically, logically or I would even say morally.
