Anyways her mom is an idiot. A student should go to the best possible school they can get into. If the CS degree from Waterloo is the best one in Canada, it will set her apart from her competition when it comes to future job prospects.

Even $22000 of debt can be a lot of money. The mom brings up a good point on debt load which many students just neglect. What is the daughter planning to major in? I would use this as a selling point if it's possible.

I think this should be a major factor in considerations - however, it also sounds like the Mom is picking points not to just be practical, but because she doesn't want her daughter to move away. Eventually, we all have to do things on our own whether our parents like it or not. We explain our actions to them and hope they understand one day. She's an adult - she should start making decisions like one.

 

There probably aren't, and I think you know that but are just venting. Kids without trust funds are fully dependent on their parents for college: at least in the States even if they're getting the loans or grants themselves, the bank and financial aid office will still ask for the parents' financials. So if they refuse to cooperate, your girl is screwed.

My only advice would be to surreptitiously swipe the mom's tax returns, maybe by getting admitted to Univ of Toronto, have mom provide the info for that and just keep the copies to remit to Waterloo. If she can't, then she will just have to tough it out at community college or U. Toronto, while working, until she can get enough to pay for Waterloo.

There might be some Canadian Department of Labor statistics that show the potential earnings for computer science grads that may help daughter compare income to the possible debt to show mom and convince her of the benefits of graduating from Waterloo. But barring that, homegirl probably doesn't have any recourse: strategically, logically or I would even say morally.

I agree with the mother. Community College first, then transfer over. She still pursues her dream and saves alot.

If Canadian bankruptcy is anything like the USA, you can't discharge student debts in bankruptcy.

Student loans are another bubble like mortgages. The next recession will be started with student loans.
