I think when the Morey fans prove his or your numbers are good for the Rockets. Then you guys can use sarcasm. Until then enjoy your short team full of metrics Morey used to aquire them.
Its like listening to a bunch of arrogant stuck up stats geeks come and tell me they are successful and I am wrong. While a booger is on their nose and their team is short.
Right..."We're a Battier away from the Spurs..." A "skilled player" was the reason they went to the Lottery in the first place. Great logic. Just like yours.
Height is just another number, dude. Just like all the stats are. Im sure Morey takes all of that into account when making moves. You're acting like he grabs some box score stats, gets excited at seeing big numbers, then tries to get the players with the big numbers. That's not how it works at all. Im willing to bet that Morey DOES have some advanced metrics that can quanitify the value of things like height, athleticism, speed, tempo, and defensive ability. Intangibles? There's plenty of ways to statistically measure how good players play with each other or how much the presence of a player being on the court or off the court can affect the team's performance. Matchups? There's plenty of metrics out there that will indicate that Player A will have a huge offensive advantage against Player B or players like Player B. You obviously can't fully grasp the extent to which stats can be gathered. The guys who put together these metrics go alot further than seeing how many rebounds a player averages or what a player's True Shooting % is. And whether you like it or not, advanced stats that tell me that Kevin Martin is significantly more effective when playing with Scola than he is when playing with Patterson and that Patterson thrives when playing with Lowry but struggles when playing with Dragic are very useful numbers when managing a team. Stats can tell you things that you don't always notice when watching the game, and if you know how to put those stats into use in the right way, you've got an advantage over people who are just watching and trying to take in everything that's happening at the same time.
Anyone who uses the phrase "stat geeks" in a derogatory manner is automatically r****ded. It's hard to decipher what exactly they ARE arguing for.
First off, we've seen teams like Sacramento use almost exclusively one way players like Miller and have great success. If the NBA didn't rig their games, Sactown would have a ring with Doug Christie as their only supposed two-way starter. Anyway, how exactly did we miss on Chandler? You think we could have competed with Dallas' "dust chip" lol? And why would we go after Allen when we already had Battier/Bud? You act like Allen was some prized FA, the guy wasn't even starting for Memphis until injuries hit them lol. He also has been anything but amazing in the playoffs. The guy is a 30 yr old headcase who had a great 30 game stretch to end the season and suddenly he's a "must have", gimme a break.
Arguing aginst Moreys total reliance on stats to make his choice for players. It is not all stats. I repeat NOT ALL STATS. You can use stats but you dont have to rely SOLELY on metrics. Since some of you are always so SLOOWWWWWWWW. I will spell everything out for you everytime I post from now on.
Ah! In that case, all we have here is a simple misunderstanding. You're completely correct in that merely looking at stats is a crappy way to run a basketball team. Fortunately for us Rockets fans, our front office agrees. They consider a wide variety of factors (including statistics) in personnel decisions. Take our selection of Patterson, for instance. After the draft, our front office people consistently talked in interviews about how great his mental makeup was - how he was tough, positive, humble, and just a plain winner. Now, I'm certain they also had statistical evidence that Patterson would be a good player, but it was just one factor out of many. If you listen to or read interviews with Morey, Rosas, Hinkie, and others, it's not a stream of ones and zeros - they talk about the same kind of things we do.
OK. Frustration with the team is building up in me. I am a real true fan of the Rockets. Want to see a positive direction involving playoffs once again real soon. Hoping this doesnt turn into years of no competing because they calculated wrongly on Yao and Tmac is all.
