What do you do about these people, especially when they are close to you. The person I reference will lie about something even when the truth is a better story. He has caused major confusion within a very close circle of people and maintains his position even when presented with evidence to the contrary. so frustrating.
I don't deal with them. Even my sister is like this and I cut her out (thanks for that advice, Jeff). They're selfish and morally broken, and you're an adult and don't have to deal with it.
The worst is when you do business with them before finding out. Ugh. Pathological liars. If there was only some way to identify you before we met you.
I've got a good buddy that's like that. He constantly gets caught in his lies, too, but it doesn't seem to phase him. I'v just learned to let him spin his yarns and let it go in one ear and out the other. My other friends and I have a good time comparing the stories because they're all wildly different.
Q: How do you know this person is a habitual liar? A: [any answer here]. THEN USE FACTS AND INFORMATION TO PROVE THAT TO THEM. *that's how I would do it*
I had a close buddy like that, but that's ok as it doesn't really effect our friendship much. They're just stories of his ventures whose purpose is to make interesting conversations or just a good laugh. As long as he doesn't do it when it really effects me emotionally or economically, then it's fine. For the others, I gradually build a wall between me and the person and eventually the wall becomes a huge fort and we don't talk anymore. That's the easiest way I can think of because calling them out on it won't stop them from further lying, which only adds to the fire.
i usually recognize it quickly and just completely remove myself from situations involving them. If i'm forced to be around them, then i pretty much discount anything they say and try to get through it. they are worse than habitual line steppers. Spoiler
dude thats nothing I was hanging out in the flood in stinkadena, when hurricane rita came, I saw a shark swimming down the street, must out got lost from the ocean. It was nuts
My sister is one and it's kinda sad. No one believes anything that comes out of her mouth. We don't really have a relationship which also sucks but I can't stand a liar or someone who steals. One of my buddies I grew up with is also a big habitual liar. We tend to just ignore what he has to say half of the time. Good guy but like we always tell him, "is this one of your you had to be there moments???".
there's a book called People of the Lie that you might be interested in reading. i've known people like this before. you're right...frustrating to say the very least.
imo, the second worst behind habitual liars are peeps you have conversations with, they don't remember they had these conversations with you, and they repeat the same stuff from their side. i guess it is semi-excusable as person may talk so much or is so busy that they forget. but, to be on the receiving end of the same conversations is no fun at all. to further cause problems, i'm not one to sit idly by and let you have the same conversation we had previously without mentioning it saying "we already had this conversation". that only makes the situation worse because they get all offended. well, now you kind of know how i feel when you repeat a conversation we had before. i'm offended you forgot we already discussed this and you are wasting my time telling me again. i'm not a perfect person by any means but i remember conversations i have with people. if you don't, then maybe you are not worth talking to. i can excuse it once or twice but, when it becomes an ongoing issue every time you talk, then it isn't pleasant after a while. that's how i feel about it.

Ha, i do that all the time because i don't see my friends very often and i forget what i've told them. I've gotten to the point to where i just tell them what i'm about to talk about and ask them if they've heard it already. Usually once my memory has been jogged I'll remember the whole conversation. I'm a stoner, man. I'm forgetful.
With people you don't see all the time, I don't have a problem with it at all. I'm talking about people you see pretty regularly and the initial conversation is only a few days or weeks old. Basically, these are the "in one ear and out the other" type of people. It's hard to be enthusiastic talking to someone who so easily forgets prior conversations...no matter what the excuse (make exceptions for alzheimer patients, older folk, and drug abusers).
this. it seems the more you smoke the more stories you have to tell as for the OP just dont tell jack **** and if you have to just tell em the opposite of what you really are trying to say that way theyll tell the truth when they go into habitual liar mode!
