Anybody have any idea why house republicans won’t vote on a house resolution honoring the Seals that killed bin Laden? I mean if they can name a court house in Jr's name, surely they can honor the brave men who killed the world's #1 trrist. House will not take up bin Laden resolution
IF you read the article, it tells you why... "House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said that House Republican leaders had been considering a symbolic resolution honoring the Navy SEALS and others involved in the bin Laden raid but that they had decided against one in an effort to keep in line with their new rules prohibiting commemorative measures. “We considered that last week, and we deal with the rules that we’ve put in place in the House, and we’ve said since we assumed the majority that we want to be substantive and meaningful,” Cantor told reporters at his weekly roundtable. He added that the House leadership ultimately decided that the best way to honor those involved in the mission was to approve the fiscal year 2011 intelligence bill that is on the floor this week. “We also understand the large impact that was gained by the intelligence community and the SEALS’ activity in Pakistan and, obviously, it’s worthy of our support,” Cantor said. “And so, we believe that the best way to express that support and extend congratulations is in the context of the intel bill.” I guess you hope most will just see your surmisal and not read the article... New rules. Change. Live with it!
AH! I see, they're just following the rules. Nothing they can do about that. That's probably why they passed the commemorative measure renaming a federal court house in Bush's honor.
I see a very large difference between a commemorative resolution about some brave Navy Seals who must remain anonymous and the renaming of a Federal Courthouse by plying the names of two former presidents who call the city where that courthouse is located "home" off-and-on. The Bushes were Presidents of these United States for 12 years and deserve an honor in their "hometown" of Midland. But keep stirrin'......
Certainly not but why the rush to commemorate an anonymous group? I think the rationale is fine. You don't. It's okay to disagree. If this were Bill Clinton would this have even been brought up?
so you simply thinks it's too early. what's the risk of it being too early? would you prefer after Obama's 1st or 2nd term?
It's a "kind-of" rule mark, that can be applied as appropriate or if necessary. You know, like all those other rules. I mean, duh. Wtf did you think the word rule meant?
I see no point in dragging this out. Keep up your woofing and baying if it makes you feel better about things! We'll never agree. They chose to honor two ex-Presidents-- a rare Father-Son pairing in that office-- in their adopted "hometown." Seems appropriate. Admit it, you're just griping because it's the Bushes....
IMO no ones complaining about GOP congress leadership's commemoration for the Bush's but the lack of commemoration for the Navy Seals et al..
A couple of your fellows are mocking the selective following of the new rules. One specifically criticized that they did it for GB43 (overlooking the honoring of GB41 simultaneously). Of course there has to be some discrimination or everyone would get an honor. Did you get yours yet? I didn't get mine.... The Seals event is less than a week ago. They have been lionized plenty. There may be a better time and place down the road to honor them specifically. I doubt they are bugged by it; that's a pretty selfless lot.
Oh my! via Think Progress -- In a Washington Post op-ed today, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) writes that the evidence used to find Osama Bin Laden was not produced by torture. The senator also said that the waterboarding of Khalid Sheik Mohammed yielded “false and misleading information.”
I agree. Former Presidents are somewhat more important than a bunch of Navy SEALS. Even if the latter president was mentally challenged.
What is your estimate of the number of commemorative monuments for each group: former presidents and Navy SEALS? Also, some kind of waiting period is usually inserted. I'm beginning to think that the lust for this monument is more about crediting Obama than those SEALS-- who probably don't need or want the recognition.
