Casey has been an NBA assistant since 1994. He's not seasoned?
Frank has 5 years head coaching experience and has been an assistant for another 6 years.

Here's a quote from Doc Rivers himself:

The Nets are one of the good stories in our league this year,” Rivers said. “Lawrence — if you had a vote for Coach of the Year, he’s got to be in the conversation.

What they’ve done is … he’s changed the system. They’ve gone to a lot of dribble-weave stuff, which they hadn’t done. It’s what Lawrence saw in their team — having Vince (Carter) and Devin, having a big in (Brook) Lopez — it fits their personnel. And it’s a complete change from what they’ve done in the past with the Princeton stuff.

If winning a coach of the year gives you a track record then maybe we should hire Sam Mitchell, Mike Brown, Mike Dunleavy or Don Chaney. They've all won coach of the year awards so they must be really good, right?

No argument about Tom T. being a defensive master. Now tell me where Frank or Casey have been and failed as defensive coaches? Casey has turned the Mavs into a decent defensive team and he's had to do it in creative ways because he has quite a few poor defenders (sound familiar). The T-Wolves were a top 10 defensive squad under Casey too. How have they faired since he left?

I'm not following that logic. The genius of Phil is his ability to manage superstars and to get them to buy into what he's doing. Miami doen't need someone to do that? What makes the Heat different than the Shaq/Kobe lakers, late '70's Sixers teams or any other collection of talent/egos like that?
You've got 3 huge stars who are each accustomed to being the goto guy and they don't need someone to convince them to sacrifice some of their individual game for the good of the team? That makes no sense to me.

So retaining Rick Adelman would have told you that we were destined for greatness? Why? The Rockets future will hinge much more on the talent that we bring in than on who's coaching the team.

Who said that Carlisle was a mediocre coach? I don't believe that he was a "proven winner" but that also doesn't mean that he's a mediocre coach.

If you want to base it on the fact that his team won 61 games one season then fine. Of course that also means that Avery Johnson would be a Hall of Fame level coach since his team won 127 games (60 and 67) in a two year span (got a COY too).

Look at the total of Carlisle's work in INDY...61 wins, next year 45 wins, next season 41 wins, next season 35 wins. That's trending the wrong way.

I think Tom T. is a great coach but he's certainly not a "proven winner" with a "track record".

D'Antoni got a coach of the year award and I think he's awful. Same for Dunleavy, Sam Mitchell and Don Chaney. All of them had a high point in their career but I wouldn't consider any of them proven winners or consider them to have a proven track record.

Truthfully, I'm curious as to who these proven winners are that we should be interviewing to replace Adelman.

    aelliott,

Carlisle won the most games in the NBA with Indiana that season...after he already won Coach of the Year with Detroit two years prior. Two different teams...after getting fired no less. He got the Indy job based largely on Larry Bird's recommendation. He should have won COY a second time...but Hubie Brown did for going 10 players deep to win with Gasol, Bonzi, White Chocalate, Battier, Mike Miller, Posey, Outlaw, etc and get smoked 0-4 in the playoffs. Gasol and Miller were back-to-back ROYs, with Battier and Williams as recent top 3 vote getters. Sure...let's go 10 deep...and watch me look special for coaching that team who I know has no shot in hell going 10 deep in the playoffs.

Now, let's recall what you said about Hubie Brown and Larry Brown. Carlisle built that Detroit team that won the Title, but they felt L Brown was necessary to take them over the top. Fine. but Carlisle still built that team. A Ring team....based on NO superstars....remember that. In fact, Brown has no chance winning without the midseason trade for 'Sheed....and we won't even talk about Carlisle developing Prince and Okur as rookies the year before...something Larry Brown is very poor at.

So what did you say about H Brown and L Brown. How you hated the era of Hubie Brown, Larry Brown and Fratella getting all the coaching jobs gypsying around the league. Think about it: You are contradicting yourself. That's whay Hubie Brown should not have won COY the year Carlisle was snubbed for pulling a T. Thibodeaux, to win the most games in the league with Jermaine freaking O'Neill as his best player. He was snubbed because he had already won before and they didn't want to give him the award twice. Carlisle was T Thib in that era....and has clearly succeeded vastly more as a head coach.

    no?

Also, are we not counting this year?

bottomline: aelliott...you know me. I'm a scout wannabe...in another world and lifetime. I don't want to be a coach or a GM. I want to work for them. But primarily, scouting is working for a coach. So I defend coaches first and foremost....until they piss off their best player. cheers!!!!

Miami Heat aren't different from those teams with huge egos. What's different is that in this era there is only one Phil Jackson. Who else can control Lebron James and Dwyne Wade? You think if you put Lawrence Frank in there that would work out? No way, the players would hate him and dump him as soon as they could find a way to. I actually think Don Chaney would be a good coach for that squad. Or a Mike Dunlevy.

Let's set aside your sarcasm, because you nailed me to the wall on not knowing Casey. I agree, he would make a great coach for us and that was a big oversight on my part.

But I'll pass on Frank and McHale. Frank is not the type of coach for this team. I wasn't impressed by his Jersey years and I think he's over-rated. Maybe that's my opinion but that's what it is.

    Casey though sounds pretty good.

    ^ tinman,

I always wanted to say to Hakeem, like Barkley just explained how great players help...

Hakeem: "I can't get it on my own."

Damn, and I'm not even talking about bball...i'm talking about playing.

    HP,

Again, nobody is saying Carlisle isn't a good coach. In fact the whole point was that there are plenty of unproven coaches that are very good.

Carlisle got fired in Detroit because Brown became available but prior that they had already refused to extend his contract (he was entering the final year). The primary reason for that was reportedly the fact that he was such a pain to work with /be around. According to all reports he has worked on those issues and improved. Also realize that one of the big knocks from the Piston fans was his refusal to give minutes to Okur and Prince until the playoffs. They also were swept in the final playoff series prior to his firing.

Carlisle got the Indy job through his Celtic connection to Larry Bird. He inherited a very good team that won 61 games in his first season. The performance of the team went down each subsequent year and he was eventually fired there.

Not to blame Carlisle for the entirety of how his run in Indy ended but coming off of that there's no way that he was considered a "proven" coach.

As far as contradicting myself, I don't see it. I got tired of the same old coaching rotation and seeing guys like PJ Carlisimo get every other job that came open. I didn't say Carlisle was a bad hire for anyone, I just said that he wasn't a proven winner when Dallas hired him. .

Do you get the point now? There are good coaches who haven't been coaching for 20 years and they deserve a chance. Most of the remaining playoff teams took a chance on a guy that wasn't a sure thing and it paid off.

Yeah every playoff team remaining is being coached by a coach who, when he was hired, was not considered an A-list coach.

Coaching hardly matters compared to talent unless you can get a great coach who fundamentally changes the way players think about the game.

Yeah, I get your point. Never argued against it. And I agree with it.

I just don't agree with your assessment of Carlisle. Not even close. You sound like a coach-hater when you describe his history. Not the way I remember it at all. Maybe I'm a Larry Brown hater and never liked the fact Brown got all the credit for what Carlisle did...especially his development of Prince and Okur...the Pistons fans are no source to site about that.

If by not play the young guys you mean "WIN" then that makes absolutely no sense. Morey wanted to dictate who played to showcase his assets, sacrificing NBA games in the process. Can't say that creates a winning environment

That last statement is the reason why our team will suck for the next decade. The significance of a great coach having a winning system predicated on ball movement supersedes talent anyday. That's basketball 101 my friend
