    Here ya go...

With a built in DVD player. Much cheaper than those outrageously priced "HDTV's"

I bought a new LCD a few months ago. From what I've read, humans cannot tell the difference between 120hz and 240. In fact, 98% of people can't tell the difference between 60hz and 120hz. Those that say they can are lying or hallucinating.

Once feature I'm surprised that I use is the Internet. Netflix streaming looks freaking awsome on the TV and looks like crap from my Blu-ray and Wii. I've also used Hulu and Vudu. I wouldn't buy another TV w/out internet.

LCD at 65inch will be costly. Plasma is the way to go at that size.

    Jay,

I was exactly in the same position as you last year. I had a Sony Grand Wega and I replaced it with a Panasonic Plasma with built in Netflix/Apps etc.

    Been pretty damn happy.

However, some people don't like Plasmas, that's fine. I think LED-TVs are at a good price point now.

If you want 3d, get LG's latest with passive glasses (aka the cheap plastic glasses) they work great and it's like $10 /glasses.

No burn in issues for me. Plus there's a screen wipe function for image retention on my plasma. you just select it, and it's just a white bar that runs across the screen and erases any image retention.

I play xbox and watch netflix and cable tv on it. No issues.

I've probably helped purchase about a dozen or so TVs from Amazon on my account for family and friends. Never once had a problem. Prices ranging from $500-$3500. Amazon is perfectly safe (at least when purchased from Amazon and not a third party vendor).

For all things holy, stay away from Worst Buy. Compare the price of the exact same model in store and online and most of the time it should be significantly cheaper online after taking taxes and shipping in consideration.

Do you have a cell phone? If so, why?

Do you have a computer? What type?

How fast is your Internet connection? Why don't you go cheaper and use dial-up?

When are those Toshiba cell tv's supposed to come out? My hdtv started to randomly shut-off after several minutes. Supposedly these new cell tv's are supposed to rival crt's as far as gaming and all the processing is said to be lightning fast.

Spending on consumer goods that stimulate foreign economy and fatten corporate cats instead of investing in your own future is economic stimulation?

HA! I can't believe that you can still buy a tube tv.

Anyway, no price savings- that thing is $152 after shipping, and you're going to need an HD tuner anyway to even get OTA broadcasts.

Here's a 19-inch HDTV with tuner built in for $159 shipped. You can pick up a DVD player for around $10 during Christmas time.

So for a $17 difference, you can't honestly tell me that you are going to get an outdated piece of tech that will use more power, take up more space, is harder on your eyes and will produce more heat which will in turn cost more money to cool.

The truth is, you can get tube TVs on Craigslist all day long for free. People are throwing them out. If you want to be a skinflint, and there's nothing wrong with that, just stock up that way and you'll never have to buy a TV again.

But this thread isn't about that- it's about a guy wanting HDTV advice. He wants to have a more pleasurable experience when he watches TV. There's nothing wrong with that either. I think it's a good idea to get a good product if you're going to spend a lot of time using it- a good TV, a good mattress, a good lawnmower, a good wife, a good car, etc.

Thanks for the help, all. Went back to a Best Buy just to look at the different models again. It was not a "Magnolia" store, but they seemed to have most models, I guess absent some of the highest end Sony's.

On the 3D side, and this may just be how the store wanted me to think, but the Panasonic active 3D was much better looking than the LG passive 3D. Of course, the glasses cost a lot more.

In general, the Panasonic plasma's definitely looked the best. Again, maybe just pushing this way. The LED's consistently looked "brighter" - and that was very tempting. Part of our issue now is a bulb that isn't bright enough. But with the LED brightness it also looked kind of cartoonish. I think I am comfortable with Plasma... though still could be convinced otherwise.

Looks like the Panny plasma's go from cheapest to most expensive, models are ST, then GT, then VT. It's next to impossible to tell at a store, or even from reviews, if the higher end model really makes that much of a difference. Given my preference for size, and not wanting to overspend if I don't have to, I'd certainly shy away from top end. But any further thoughts from the Panny owners, Plasma vs. LED, other brands, great deals, etc. appreciated.

The brightness level of a best buy store is much higher than in your house.
unless you watch tv with all the lights on and the windows open.

Plasmas have the best picture and aren't that expensive. I'd go with a 55"+ Panasonic plasma, if I were you. 3D or no 3D is your choice, but 3D TV's will have higher refresh rates which is nice even in non-3D mode.

A lot of people say LED's look better, but they don't. I've had a Panasonic 42" Plasma (which broke) and now have a Samsung 46" LED... and the plasma looked better. Conveniently, they're cheaper, too. The only thing they don't have going for them is power consumption, heat, and thickness. Oh, and the LED's are brighter (which makes people think they're better).

Well, like I mentioned in my previous post, I have been very happy with my Panny Plasma. "Burn in" is really a thing of the past, especially with the "pixel orbitor" that discretely moves pixels around so they aren't static. You might get "image retention" at times but you can do the screen swipe like Tinman mentioned. I play video games on mine, never had image retention problems.

The Pannys are plenty bright. Bright though is not always better. In fact in dark rooms you might feel eye strain if it is too bright. Rooms that get a lot of sun might need the picture brighter. And speaking of sunny rooms, you do have to deal with some "glare" on plasmas since they have glass versus the matte of LCDs. But if things are placed right, not too much an issue.

What I love about my Panny is the THX picture mode that really dials in the colors perfectly (particularly skin tones). Some say it is a bit dark but I don't think so, especially in non bright rooms.

Again, I would give the Panny plasmas a hard look.

Again, thanks fothe advice thus far all. I think I'm definitely going plasma. Down to Panasonic vs Samsung. Going with the 60/59 inch model. So models I'm looking at include

Panasonics - ST30 or GT30 in the 60 inch version. The GT is more expensive and gets you the THX picture setting, so I guess avoids professional calibration needs, but then you could just get the ST and find settings online that give you the best picture? GT is meaningfully more expensive and I'm already spending more than I want.

Samsung - D6500 or D7000. In the 59 inch mode. The biggest difference I can gather is the 7000 is better for daylight glare reduction... But the 6500 is fine there and most tv watching is done at night anyway. There is of course a price difference.

Panny's seem to be professionally reviewed slightly above the Samsung. But I'm a consumer, not a pro. The Samsungs seem to run slightly cheaper, and seem to come with a free 3D starter kit (2 3D glasses), the 3D glasses if you need extra theyve reduced to $50 to get closer to the cheaper passive 3d glasses, and I think the internet apps, while great on both, might be slightly better on Samsung - a fully itegrated web browser and remote with full qwerty keyboard on back.

    I'm leaning Samsung right now.

Panasonic is the official 3dtv for Avatar.

actually the thing I think Samsung is better at is the TV design, they are slicker and thinner looking.

he should read up on the particular models though before he buys it.

I dont like plasma TV, I prefer LCD or LED.
LCD/LED saves more energy, and IMO the picture looks better, but they are more expensive.

    Incredibly over hyped selling point.

How did you come to this conclusion? Store viewing or .........?
