So, if HBO is able to produce such a quality movie streaming app for Android... Why can't Netflix do the same?
I never understood the concept of watching a movie on a phone. Who is the target audience for a product like this?
I imagine when HBO owns most of the content it streams (and the rest is tied to your paid subscription) the DRM issues are a lot easier to circumvent.
Killing time at an airport, doctors office, in the car (as a passenger), in a hotel room (if you don't travel with a laptop), BATHROOM ... I don't think anybody would voluntarily choose phone over laptop, desktop PC, or tablet (ipad)... but when you realize that you ALWAYS have your phone on you, wherever you go, it becomes the most conveinent and used device to watch streaming content.
I've been watching Band of Brothers again. I've also been checking out Generation Kill, pretty damn cool series.
Viewing perspective. Its not about the size of the screen, it's about how much of the screen fills your field of vision. My iPhone in my hands 18 inches from my face fills as much of my field of vision as my 50 inch LCD mounted on the wall 10 feet away. Obviously you can't get surround sound with headphones, but if you get a good set, it's very damn good and you may even hear nuances you miss in all but the most finely tuned watching areas.
Genuinely happy for HBO subscribers. Had to cut the cable beginning of last year due to cost/bad viewing habits, but would willingly pay $30-40/month for something like this; rather than waiting until kingdom come* for DVD releases. *It seems like they don't release DVDs for True Blood/Entourage type shows until after the start of the following season. Smart because it maintains the value of the subscription, but also a recipe for theft if there ever was one.
HBO users have the TV subscriptions also which means during core/bulk viewing hours they won't be using the app, and it's a single network rather than an entire library of films, so less users less often which means they can have higher quality in the same bandwidth. Or, TimeWarner is just willing to dump extra cash into this because HBO makes them so much money on DVDs, syndication and full-on cable suscriptions. Or the fact the TimeWarner seemed to master internet content just a hair better than any big media company, AOL notwithstanding. Remember the Disney/ABC/ESPN GO Network? NBC buying the Xoom portal?
Best. App. Ever. I am now able to watch Sopranos and The Wire from the beggining. Also nice to be able to introduce family/friends to HBO shows I rave about but which they can't see cause they don't have HBO. I'm very curious to see how they add/rotate film content. The films are decent but by no means anywhere near their full library.
I'm glad so many people are able to get this to work. I created a Go ID and went to log in on my droid x and it wants me to create a new login. I log out on my laptop and now there is no way for me to sign in. If I click on sign in it takes me back to create a new login... The provider is Directv btw. Is anyone else having this problem?
Well scratch that. I used the same id and added another number behind it and now it decides to log in. Oh well at least it works now.
For anyone that doesn't have HBO, if you know someone that has it, they can share their info with you and it will work. My brother uses mine all the time.
Yup, I let a co-worker using an iPad get on, and we're even able to be on at the same time lol. Who knows how long that might last though.
I just used HBO GO for the first time last night to stream True Blood to my lap top and watch it on my TV. It was pretty laggy and I have a good internet connection. Anyone else experience significant lag and know anything to be done?
1,000,000 app downloads in the 1st week! I think I'm going to have to subscribe to HBO. http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-20061752-17.html
ok, will it not let you use cellular data? it always gives me some BS warning. I keep forgetting that I have HBO. I only watch like three tv channels.
The App is awesome. However, what is pretty uncool is that it won't let you do video out. I have it running on my iPad and it won't let me output to my projector via the HDMI cable. I hope they change that.
