So the Lakers and Spurs dynasties end at the same time.

And to those handful of posters who are BUGging out right now and believed Kobe was winning championships in spite of Gasol...well look at what happens when Gasol is actually playing badly. They can't do it without him. So long, farewell!

I am not Tmac4thewin but I will bite.

Claiming that Kobe was better skillwise, like you did, was just plain silly.

Some things that I can name right up top in favor of Jordan....

Jordan was a better post player (a huge huge advantage).

    Jordan was a better defender:
    -better on ball defense
    -better covering passing lanes
    -better at weakside blocks.

IMO, Jordan also had a better mid-range jumper.

Kobe has a better 3 point shooting.

The rest of the skill-sets are very similar to me.

And yes Jordan had an edge in terms of mentality and killer instinct.

Having said all that and saying that Jordan is better than Kobe, I think Kobe is the closest thing to Jordan, outside of the big men.

I dont have a problem saying it because I have watched them through their careers. I have enjoyed watching them play, and although I dont like their personalities, I have loved their games.

So I ignore the Jordan lovers who claim that Kobe is nowhere close to Jordan just as equally as I ignore the Kobe lovers who claim Kobe is better than Jordan.

We might see the end of the Celtics as well. Magic never really made it to the top. And maybe we'll see the Bulls rise again, and who knows, maybe the Rockets will too...

how about the final arbiter that the whole world knows MJ was better.

Were you around when MJ played? MJ was a closer. Kobe is an opportunist.

MJ would never have gone down 3-0 first of all. MJ would put the team on his back and take over. Kobe has stretches but rarely takes and just owns the game like MJ did. Owning the game, whereas it took a hot ron artest in game 7 last year to barely eek it out. Jordan would never do that because it would not get to that.

Jordan was more consistent in the playoffs and more of an alpha dog carrying his team. Kobe makes shots, jordan makes plays.

Earlier in his career MJ was like Kobe great skills awesome player, but couldnt take it to the next level. Once MJ dialed in ,and started winning he won all the way through.. Rarely lost the last few years and even when he did lose it was at the wizards or in between baseball.

As for skills kobe can make shots but relied on shaq and gasol more than MJ ever relied on pippen or rodman.

oh yeah and then there is this:

skill set? Are you f-ing kidding me?

pretty impressive how jason kidd, a 38 year old 6-4 pg, is playing pretty good defense on kobe.

I disagree too, Kobe rode the most dominant player of his time on his way to three-peating, in Jordan's case, he was the most dominant perimeter player ever and the most dominant of his time.

    Loving it. Lakers are DONE.

I hate to say it, but Go Mavs in this series. Hope they lose in the next series though.

Just to point out a few things from this post:

...well he had a larger body for that. We know Kobe works out as much as Jordan but his frame didn't allow him to be the big guard Jordan was. I think Kobe is actually very skilled in the post but it's just not an advantageous position for him to be in given the size of most of his defenders.

...that's really an apples/oranges comparison because the league rule changes have drastically altered the way defense is played today. Would Jordan be an elite defender today? Yes. But he wouldn't be able to use that strength advantage to physically guide players with his arms the way they did in the 80s. I think Jordan & Kobe would probably would probably be very similar on ball defenders in today's game.

Your probably right about this one although Kobe is respectable at that as well but advantage goes to Jordan.

This is just wrong. Jordan had to develop that mid range jumper through his career - he wasn't always the marksmen we remember from later in his career. He was always a gifted scorer, but his mid range game was spotty early on his career. Kobe on the other hand has always had good range in the league.

    [/QUOTE]
And yes Jordan had an edge in terms of mentality and killer instinct.

I don't know if your using the right description here because I think Kobe absolutely matches Jordan in every way for intensity and killer instinct. Where they differ is Kobe took several more years to figure out how to make his teammates better. In general, Jordan knew how to reach every player on his rosters and make them focus and work towards the same goal. Kobe has never had that ability to galvanize his teammates in the same way. That was a huge difference between the two players

....I guess I tend to agree that Kobe is a more skilled player than Jordan. I think Kobe has had a more refined skill set for much longer in his career than Jordan did. That being said, Jordan is clearly the better player because Kobe is only average at best in all social aspects of the game. Jordan was more complete...but I think in terms of skills, Kobe is probably slightly better than Jordan. And that's not coming from a Kobe hate/love - I'm really indifferent about him.

I don't think the Lakers are done the same way the Spurs are, but they've definitely got to make some changes.

I was talking about that earlier. I think it's because Kidd is smart enough to understand Kobe's tendencies and knows not to fall for the tricks. Smart players tend to play Kobe better(Battier anyone?) than raw athletes do. That being said, Kobe was pretty much scoring when he wanted over Kidd but they were all contested shots and most were jumpers.

i suppose it depends on how we're factoring in athleticism/physical dominance. jordan was further ahead of his peers athletically than kobe. that's a huge, and perhaps really the only, reason he was more dominant.

kobe is a very good post player. i wouldn't count it as much of an advantage at all. at least in terms of the variety and skill each displays in the post.

and i would say most all of that was because of his physical dominance relative to kobe. i don't know, maybe jordan had better hands for slapping the ball away or something like that, but just in terms of defensive skill i'm not sure jordan got better results just because of skill.

i don't know what the numbers say, but even if jordan did shoot better from mid-range, i would say it was probably because defenders feared his drive more (again, physically more dominant) and jordan got clearer mid-range looks. kind of like how lebron actually has very good mid-range field goal numbers this year. while he has gotten better, i don't think his numbers would be better than guys like kobe and durant if people didn't basically leave him open just begging him to shoot an open 18 footer instead of driving. purely from the perspective of skill, lebron isn't a better mid-range shooter than kobe or durant, it's just that he's never guarded. and i think the same applies to kobe and jordan, although not to the same degree.

i hated jordan so much i was rooting for the jazz in the '97 and '98 finals (although in hindsight i'm glad they lost) and kobe is no where close to jordan.

Now that I think about it, history could repeat. Kobe rode the coat tails of a center that moved from Orlando to LA in Shaq. He could do it again with another center from Orlando named Dwight.
