I lived in Battery Park when the ****ers blew up the WTC. You could literally throw a baseball from the roof of my old building to some of the rubble from the bombings.

It's stupid to sit around thinking "how a man like him" can lead to so many deaths. Osama didn't create the climate in the Middle East. He is a consequence of the circumstances not the cause. Osama is gone, every bomb we drop creates 5 more like him.

In any case Obama wins 2012 re-election on May 1, 2011.

He did many things right, starting with actually going after Osama (unlike Bush who didn't seem to think it was important). Killing him, instead of bringing him back like Bush did Hussein, mistreating him and making him a martyr. Dumping him at sea to get rid of the evidence etc.

We didn't want him alive and Osama didn't want to be taken. He went out blazing with a gun in his hand.

It's not a matter of ill will. Americans are stupid and think this means some kind of beginning of the end... ie no more Miss USA being felt up by TSA when trying to get from ****ing Fresno to Baltimore or 25,000 of our soldiers patrolling the streets of Kabul. Good luck with that. Osama had nothing to do with why we're in Iraq or still in Afghanistan.

I also think this is the reason why he was "buried at sea." I'm not a conspiracy-theorist by any means but I have a hard time believing that the U.S. just disposed of his body. With the rumored amount of body doubles OBL had, I would think that an official autopsy would be in order.

That is a good point but that goes for almost any major figure such as Hitler didn't create the conditions in Germany that allowed the Nazis to take power. He just happened to be the guy to take advantage of the situation. There were a lot of things that led to the creation of Al Qaeda but OBL was the man who did it. While there were a lot of extremist who hated America he was the guy who had the vision and capability to put together 9/11. Under different circumstances he might have been someone who did a lot of good instead of evil.

Anyway I find myself thinking more about all those who have died than about celebrating OBL's death.

Yeah it's like any time a police officer is killed; you know there will be a manhunt and, as long as no cameras are watching, the dude won't live.

Osama was responsible for the deaths of civilians, fire fighters, and police officers; had they captured him, the joy wouldn't have been as high. I truly believe there would have been a TON of outrage and anger in the US, replacing much of the joy (anger from US citizens not directed at the US, but at the situation). This was the best outcome. It prevents his picture (of being in custody) from being displayed across the world, likely escalating the outrage from al Qaeda.

Further, the best way I can think of rationalizing Osama's killing versus capture is by comparing it to Timothy McVeigh. Did putting McVeigh through the drawn-out legal process (and even letting him say final words while staring in the camera at the victims' families) and a subsequent peaceful execution ease everyone's pain or satisfy a sense of vengeance?

I say no, and in the case of Osama bin Laden being killed, the overwhelming sense of euphoric relief from a symbolic triumph greatly outweighs any benefits (or, more likely, increased [security] risks at home and abroad).

At the risk of moving this D & D I would have rather seen him captured and put on trial. It might not change OBL but it would give the families of the victims a chance to directly confront him with the suffering he has created and reaffirm to the World our values.

I agree though that if he had been captured any trial would be very difficult to pull off.

Anyone know more of the burial at sea? I don't mean the specifics of this one, but in general, is there a certain prodecure followed that is known about?

Weigh it down with the dog tags of fallen American GIs and drop it to the bottom of the ocean.
