Came across some great videos while on YouTube, one of which was the Astros vs. Expos brawl from 1996. Epic. I'm amused by the "ho-hum" nature of it all (compare it if it occurred today): <iframe width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/IgQ9Y1WQLgA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Lol, geez. That was a absolute demolishing by the Expos. I guess I'd start a brawl too if I gave up 20 hrs in the game.
Darwin was a certified bad ass. The Astros and Expos had quite a few brawls in the 90s. I remember one game where Todd Jones kept trying to hit Dennis Martinez by throwing further and further inside but El Presidente kept jumping out of the way until he walked. Jones (or maybe someone else) then tried to plunk Martinez while he was leading off of 1st. There was another brawl between the two teams that involved Spike Owens, but I can't recall the specifics.
Wow. O'Henry. The Expos. John Cangelosi. The old SportsCenter format. Really takes me back. And I totally remember this fight. Repped.
Guy deserved to get plunked. You don't stand there and watch it leave, you trot it out like a pro. Good for Darwin.
Another epic brawl of the Astros, but this is a year before in 95 against the Reds! <iframe width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/IkHuEEGaPTY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
what a great thread. thanks for both vids and thanks again to cangelosi all these years later for going after a 6-8 dude. show him up!
Ahh I miss those teams, it was such a good time to be a kid in Houston. Astros were on the upswing and the Rockets were bringing home rings.
Those summers were a blast. 94 we watched the Rockets win the first title in our city's history...at the Dome we were watching an MVP in the making and our 'stros seriously competitive for the first time in a long time, until the strike cut it short.
i remember both of those fights. i miss the gold/blue astros colors. ahhhhhhh back when ESPN showed actual sports game highlights rather than one or two plays per game/Boston/NY/LA/LBJ "stories".
"Perception is reality" only for the delusional. Those of us with our feet on terra firma know the difference between what is perceived and what is real.
I love the commentary, like a boxing match. good stuff. The score is only thing the current roster has in common with those guys.
