It looks like that saved money will go to getting secondary help in free agency. Can't have vets at every position.
We needed a backup QB. Worthless is a bit of an overstatement, but I think we are on similar paths. I find it odd that we drafted someone so slow, and inexperience with running bootlegs. Most of the Texans big plays are products of play action, and that doesn't seems to be Yates' game. Kid should be a solid pocket passer and game manager, just seems like an odd pick for our offense. Pro's outweigh the cons by a far cry though.
I can already see it...Schaub gets destroyed by Woodley and Yates comes in to lead us to the Super Bowl. 10 years later ESPN will have a special called the Great Eight and Yates will begin to cry mid interview only to be hugged by his super model wife.
144 - possible but it seems Quinn is moving to safety and Nolan is set to take the reigns as a starter. Or, there is also a possibilty of getting a FA with experience and some veteran leadership. Plus, i wouldnt be surprised to see one of the other CBs drafted to get a shot at safety. Finally, they did draft a safety, just because it wasnt your guy they obviously drafted that need. 152 - it's been repeated over and over again that a "space eater" is not necessarily what Wade wants on his defense.
I'm freaking shot over the moon with this draft. A- I'm betting we will flip Yates for some high picks in 2-3 years when there's a team out there dying for a QB. The only thing we whiffed on was a WR.
Read this about Yates, pretty intriguing, although I'm sure there are other reasons Ponder was taken well ahead of him... "Compare his stats to Ponder this year. Yates attempted more passes, had more yards per attempt, higher completion percentage, and a higher passer rating. Ponder was the 12th pick and Yates was the 152 pick. Yates has been playing in a nfl style offense and has the potential to be great. This was a great pick, especially for the 5th round." Pugs
Ah, wasn't aware of that. In that case, I would have gone with Quan Sturdivant -- an aggressive, tough 'backer with the ability to be a major special teams contributor and provide depth inside.
Yep, I'd give them an A- too. I'm satisfied with everyone of the picks. Now I'm just curious to see how Wade implements some of them into the game. Rotating 3-4 / 4-3 ?
I think part of the problem is that he's been very clear that he doesn't want to change positions. Otherwise, someone might have taken a flier as a wildcat/slash type guy.
i don't get this. for a team that was god-awful on defense, a backup QB, at any spot in this draft, is ridiculous. this team is NOT in need of a backup QB. maybe if i had a crap's worth of faith in our GM to adequately handle free agency, i wouldn't feel that way...but i don't.
Day 1 and 2, I'll say an early A- Not nearly as impressed today. I would have much rather they stayed still and taken Carter. Not seeing the benefit in taking a backup DB, a special teams only hitter, and a high risk/reward dice roll QB over a guy that could really help a need position. That said, 5th round and beyond is all about taking big dice rolls.
