Honestly, the main reason people JB is to download apps for free. Some don't do that and take advantage of other uses*, but I'd say the majority initially JB to get to the free apps.

*there's a program I use called irealSMS I believe, that allows me to respond to people's text messages without leaving the app I'm in. In other words, if I'm on safari and surfing the net when someone texts, I don't have to leave Safari to respond to the text.

I'm not really in it for the free apps but I like the customization that can be done when jailbroken. I have viewed my cousin's and it is pretty cool. But.....I wouldn't mind a place where you can get free tunes. ;)

Where can you get the free apps? I'm a member of A LOT of private torrent sites but none have iPhone apps?

I JB my iPhone 4 last week with redsn0w. I honestly dont remember the website i used but i just followed the steps on the page and it was done less than 10 minutes later.

    AT&T iPhone 4 (v4.3.2)
I had an earlier version installed but upgrade before the JB, in all honesty that took longer than the JB procedure.

once you JB you should have a Cydia or Installus(sp?) icon, that is the new app store, you can find additional repositories and add them to Cydia giving you a larger selection of apps to download.

Some apps still cost thru Cydia, so keep an eye out before you install.

Do you lose the original app store when jailbreaking?

It's still there, you have both.

I bought NBA Jam after JB'ing at the App Store.

I jailbreak my phone and only have one thing from cydia installed on it.

I don't download any illegal apps etc.

You might say it's pointless for me to jailbreak, but the cydia app I have is worth it (lock calendar).

Plus, I like the possibility that I can download themes or other cool things.

You have to manually add a repo to cydia to get the installous app.

That's another thing- the 'vanilla' Cydia repos are only the tip of the iceberg. You can add more to get more apps from Cydia.

    Here's what I added:
    cydia.hackulo.us
    repo.insanelyi.com
    cydia.xsellize.com
    mirrors.xbmc.org/apt/ios

Ohhh you got that replacement home app which costs $15? How are you liking it? I was thinking of getting it then decided to stick with LP+.

As far as jailbreaking goes, I am surprised nobody has mentioned FREE TETHERING (free if your carrier does not find out) and SIM unlocks. Most people I know who jailbreak do it for those reasons.

And to all of the people who use jailbreaking to steal paid apps- you should seriously be ashamed of yourselves. Karma is going to come back to bite you. It is wrong and not to mention, illegal.

No offense, but those look pretty terrible. They look like slot machine interfaces in some seedy Atlantic City casino.

I don't necessarily like the looks but I like that it can be customized.

Jailbreak was successful! Now what are some good apps to have after this? The only thing I have so far is Barrel and Android lock screen.

Check out the iphone app thread.

From Cydia (assuming you've added the repos I listed earlier):

-SBS Settings and it's associated apps that auto install
    -AdBlock- blocks ads
    -ChatPic
    -CyDelete
    -Cygadget
-Exchange Unlock (kills p/w lock requirement from exchange email)
-EZDecline- adds a decline button when the phone rings
    -FaceBreak
-Fast Copy (removes the copy/paste delay)
    -Five Icon Dock
    -Folders in Folders
-Everything on the Hackulous repo except Crackulous
    -iFile
    -Iconoclasm
    -iMame4all & roms
    -iMemory Enhancer
    -Infinifolder
    -IntelliScreen
    -Mail Enhancer
    -Maps Enhancer
    -My3G
    -MyWi
    -NoAccessorySplash (no more Accessory Connected)
-NoSpot (disables the search page that's to the left of your home page, I hate that thing)
    -Six Icon Dock
    -Speed Intensifier - this is a must-have
-Tab+ - more tabs (windows) for Safari
    -VoiceMailBlock
    -Volume Boost
    -WiFiFoFum
    -5-Row Keyboard IOS4
    -5-Row QUERTY
