Marc Gasol's contract is up this year but he is a restricted free agent. He would be an excellent fit on our team in my opinion. Of course Memphis will try to retain him, but their committed salaries are now about 5 million higher than us with the extension of Randolph. Just curious what people think -- would he be a good fit for our team? His numbers are solid, but not extraordinary (11.7 pts, 7.0 reb, 1.7 blks in 32 min/game. PER of 16.8 this year and 19.3 last year). Also, I wonder how much we would have to offer to get Memphis to not match. I am guessing around $14 million/year. We might be able to free up that room with some creative trading. I'm not convinced he's worth it at that level, but he would be a good acquisition at $11 million.
Unless the new CBA handicaps them from matching, I expect they will literally match any offer. Grabbing Gasol as a free agent is a pipe-dream, imo. Maybe we could clear space and then tell the Grizzlies to S&T him to us or else we'll offer him a max contract (which they'd have to match). Then, to avoid the salary burden, they'll instead accept some reasonably priced assets from us. But, I don't think that would work either. Just look elsewhere.
yea, no way anyone pry's him away from the grizzlies. I would offer him max dollars. You can argue he is not worth it, but to our current team he is. He doesnt make us a championship team but he would propel us into the playoffs.
I'd much rather try to outbid the Clippers for DeAndre Jordan. Hometown kid with more potential then Marc Gasol.
"Our goal is to not just make the playoffs, but to compete with the top teams and be a championship contending team. We can sit here and lie to you and tell you we'd be happy with just making the playoffs, but we like to be up front, and just making the playoffs isnt good enough for us." *Some of that made-up.
Memphis may be foolish enough that they will match the way you are saying, but he is not worth max money. Kendrick Perkins just signed an extension for $8-9 million/year. Nene has been getting paid $11 million. Even Joakim Noah will only average $12 million for the next 5 years. If Memphis were to match a max offer we should welcome that kind of mistake.
true enough, but with him we would be much closer to becoming a championship contender. If we must start somewhere we should start where we are deficient. Gasol is a pipe dream anyway.... We need a big man, any starting quality big man would push us into the playoffs... a commonly held belief... the development of our current talent and acquisition of new assets (players/coach’s) could get us into the top 8 teams in the league.... (or so we all hope)
Max dollars would be a mistake by any team. I think a fair salary would be $11 million. I'm guessing the RFA premium on top of that is 3-4 million, not 5-6 million. The new league contract is going to be very important to this. With Gasol here is our lineup: Gasol, Scola, Chase, Martin, Lowry. Bench: Patpat, Hill, Lee, Dragic. After that, we need to find an upgrade at SF by trading Scola and Chase. SF is the easiest position to get talent, so we'd have a clear path to a contending team.
Ditto. He would fill more of our needs than Gasol ever would despite Gasol being more talented offensively.
Bogut is better than Gasol, yet his salaries for the next three years are only $12 million, $13 million, and $14 million. So Gasol at $14 million is actually a very generous offer. Unfortunately Bogut is completely unobtainable unless Morey has blackmail photos on Bucks management. However with Gasol's RFA and Memphis's cap crunch, we have a little play. I would be very surprised if Memphis matched an offer averaging $16 million, by us or any other team.
Doubt the Rockets have any cap room to make a rich enough offer for Gasol under any plausible CBA scenario. They might have had enough had they just like Battier's contract expired instead of taking on the burden of the $6 mil or so owed to Thabeet or have retained the 2012 first round pick instead of taking on Terrence Williams' salary. Great moves this season!
Just because he jumps higher doesn't mean he has more potential. I would go on a limb to say that Marc is probably more talented than DeAndre in every category but shot blocking. Sure shot blocking is what we need, but I dont think DeAndre is good enough at it to warrant the downgrade in every other area.
