Wade really seemed to want Aldon Smith and the Texans love of Peterson was pretty well documented. They were probably a bit shocked that they couldn't get either player and wanted to make sure they got at least one of their top 3 guys.
They get their CB in free agency. Aside from that if you have a dominant pass rush you can potentially make scrub DBs into pro bowlers.

We don't really know that. Watt was actually high on a lot of teams boards. Obviously the demand for Fairely and Quinn wasn't high as high at the point when the Texans had their pick. Otherwise, they might have traded down.

I have no doubt that Watt will be a decent player and a hardworker but the talent that was available at our pick was incredible and there were about 3-4 guys I'd take before him. Awful selection by the team in terms of draft position but it would have been solid a few more slots down.
His closing speed really stands out. It's almost unreal how quickly he catches up to offensive players and brings them down. It's the same thing every year - people will piss and moan about every pick. The thing about drafts that most people don't realize is that in the end, it's not about getting the sexiest or most popular pick. It's about selecting a guy who is going to make a positive impact on your team. In six months, most people won't care about who was drafted 12th or 14th or 19th...what will matter is whether the guy is doing the right stuff. Fifth, sixth and seventh round picks turn out to be pro bowlers from time to time. You'd think that fans of the team that drafted Mario Williams over Reggie Bush and Vince Young would have learned this by now, but no.
I think you're right, Watt was fairly high on quite a few team's boards. Dallas' second choice behind Tyron Smith was apparently Watt, who they would've apparently had no qualms with taking at 9. What are you talking about? Anyone that saw this guy play came away impressed. Go to a college forum and read what people said about the guy don't just look at stats and make your judgement on him. Also so what if he's white? Clay, Jason Allen, Urlacher, Cushing seriously there have been MANY MANY great white defensive players, get that **** outta here. A lot of 3-4 guys had this guy coming off and i'm sure he was the 3rd rated defensive player for the Texans. People need to chill out and just let the pick sink in. It was far from horrible.
This is exactly what I'm talking about. It does not matter. You're not going to be there a few slots down. You're on the clock now and the guy you want for your team is on the board. Why should it matter that he is projected to go at 20 instead of 11? This is your one shot at him. You take him, period. You need a DE, he's the best available DE on your board. That's all that matters. The same thing even happens in fantasy football. There's always that guy who everybody derides as making egregious reaches. Yet when the season rolls around the same guy is obliterating people with his lineups, because he got the guys HE wanted and not the guys other people were telling him should be "projected" to go at his draft position.
This is my only problem with any of your arguments. We had 1 3-4 DE, and that was Smith. We just assume Williams is talented enough to play DE in a 3-4, which he probably is. That's not his position though. He's ideal as a 4-3 end, and the build of a good 3-4 DE. Phillips seems to insist that the OLB in his system plays more like a traditional 4-3 DE than a linebacker.
Safe pick but a little underwhelming. I really liked Quinn but Watt is a solid prospect who will make an immediate impact when on the field. We have huge holes in the secondary and need an OLB but I'm glad we addressed the DL even though I thought it would be a DT first.
And I meant Jared Allen. Van Den Bosch... The dude produced in his college season and the workouts though. He's far from a workout warrior. Also I agree if this was there guy you take him. You don't play around and drop a few spots, you only do that if you're not sure on the players left. It sounds to me they really liked this guy behind Aldon Smith. That's really all that matters right now. We can debate 3 years from now on whether it was a bad pick but right now it wasn't really a reach. Also I never have problems with getting guys that have desire and love for the game.

this is a wade pick. Give the man what he wants to turn this defense around. If we have any semblance of of a defense (middle of the pack, not 30th) we make the playoffs purely because our elite offense.
