I have been approached with this several times over the years, and even other similar things. It is always fishy, it's always some "fell off the back of the best deal ever truck" story. The last time it happened to me, it was two cute chicks and they pulled up to me in traffic at a stoplight. I just laughed, lazy chicks ain't even doing it right. I have also had the "Hey, I see your bumper and grill are jacked up, I can fix that... I live right around the corner and can fix that like new in an hour" a couple of times. The last guy kept reducing his story/price/salesjob every time I politely told him no thanks, until he basically admitted he was desperate and needed some money for food for his family (who was in the car). I told him "why didn't you say so" shook my head a bit and gave him 10 bucks. Wouldn't have after that, normally, but the wife was pissed that was their lot (she wasn't even going along with it) and they had an infant in the back. My boss had one of these repair guys hit him up a couple of years ago. He accepted the "we can fix it now for nothing" sales pitch, and they proceeded to "fix" his porsche suv by doing a crappy job fixing a wrinkle in his bumper, and sprayed flat paint on the job. I laughed at that too. Still do, when I see it. yeah, I think he left it there to remind him to be smarter next time.
I bet they work...try them out and if they do, sell them on ebay or craigslist...The way to think of it is someone needed the money more than you did...live and learn bro...
I've been approached about this on two separate occasions. Driving along i10 on the feeder, a blue ford grabs my attention. The guy driving signals me telling me that my tire is rolling weird, so I pull over to check it out. As soon as I step out of my car, guy starts to talk about how he has a home theatre system brand new blah blah blah. I tell him to **** off get in my car and drive off; there was nothing wrong with my tire. The second time I was leaving walmart with my gf; lady comes up to me saying she has a home theatre system that's worth 1500, and she's willing to give it up for 300 cash. I tell her "No thank you", commence to walk away and the b**** starts to follow me just ranting how this is a once in a lifetime opportunity blah , blah , blah. We don't say anything to her just get into the car and leave. I had no idea that these were scams; people never seem to amaze me. Blame Obama & garage rednecks.
This post reminds me of the "I'm travelling with my family, and we ran out of gas" scam. 99% of the time, anybody that spins a yarn like that is a scammer.
I hear ya. That's why I said normally... but that wasn't how they approached me or that. Seeing how the family thing wasn't really his angle, and he basically had conceded at that point with his original angle, begrudgingly... that and judging by the looks of them and their current state... whether it was a line or not, they needed the cash.
I kind of thought I was the only one being scammed. LOL. A similar situation just happened to me. Last Saturday, I went to get a bite to eat with my girlfriend during her lunch break at a Chick-File The Chick-File is right next to a Best Buy in Clear Lake. We finished eating and said goodbye. As I was walking out to my car I heard this white Suburban playing some ghetto techno music. I looked up just in time to see this idiot pull into the spot right next to me like a maniac, nearly hitting my door. So he popps out and says "Hey bro, you got a minute". I was kind of pissed off with the jerk wad but I was cool about it and said I could speak to him for just a second. He started talking about how bad ass his system was and what a great deal he got for it. I was like whatever, I have heard better. So then he tells me that his boss is going to kill him if he can't sell all his ****. That's when he leads me to his trunk, opens the door and shows me all these boxes he "has to sell". He opens one up and pulls something out and says "I can get you a great deal on this used hair gel, it's almost like new". I was like WTF!
I have run into the poor stranded stranger and I never give them cash. I've told them to meet me at the pump and I'd put $10 in gas for them. half the time they never show up.
This is not true. High quality stolen goods get sold by these types of guys. You can get towers that retail in the thousands for a fraction of the price.
If I wanted some decent fakes, I'll just head down to Harwin rather than be annoyingly hassled in the parking lot.
I'm sure they do but then you pretty much know you are buying stolen goods. Who wants to be the guy knowingly buying stolen goods? Also, if you can't try the merchandise out until after the transaction, then you are still taking a huge risk. They are not giving you a discount out of the kindness of their hearts. There is always an angle.
Happened to a woman who lives near me. She paid me to hook up her new home theater....only, it was one of those and she was scammed.
Not me. Karma will always get you. Was just sayin.. A few of my friends did get some crazy towers though in my Baylor days. House parties ftw.
So I was driving on westheimer past the galleria going toward downtown and a guy in SUV told me to pull over because he saw my tire was falling off or something was lose and needed to be fixed immediately. When I pulled over the guy said he works for a mechanic shop and this is very dangerous. He told me I'm not going to make past a couple blocks and wants me to be safe so he offered to fix it for me right there for 80 bucks. I asked him if I could take my car to his shop to get it fixed but he kept making excuses like my car wont make it there or his boss will charge alot more. Thats when I realized this was all bull**** and I've been driving for a couple months without any trouble. Watch out for couple Italian guys driving a SUV on westheimer.
My roommate in college bought some of these speakers. He said when he opened them all these parts came falling out of the speakers. Put them back together and we used them for years. They worked well-enough, but I have no idea how much money he spent on them.
