Conspiracy theory - Rockets already know who our next head coach is

As this season wound down I started to get the feeling that the Rockets have probably already made their minds up with regard to who will be our next head coach. And nothing I've seen since has changed IMO. Au contraire, from my perspective, confirmations have been plentiful. There has been a plan in place that continues to be followed.

    A few items....

Before the end of the season the brass made no bones about Adelman most likely not being back....and then he was quickly ushered out. I know Rick was brought in to coach a contender and we're rebuilding, but the Rockets CONFIDENTLY said adios to a great coach.(a move I agree with under the circumstances)

To my way of thinking the Rockets have lined up a buffet of obligatory/strategic interviews that reeks of a smokescreen.
Many of our candidates don't have a chance in Hell of becoming our next coach.
    Why do this?
    - favors to ex Rockets
    - PR angle
    - perception around the League
    - Shield against possible tampering due to our guy still being involved in the
    playoffs
    - Leverage against the "real" guy regarding $$$$$$ during the negotiation phase.
    - Perhaps said coach is on the fence but I doubt it.
    ...lots of possibilities
Anyway look at Les's hires. He gets who he wants ...top notch talent. I can't help but think this is Morey's ballgame now and he knows who he wants.

Do you all think this is a legit coaching search or has the decision been narrowed down to 1 or at most 2 guys already?

yea, you're right in the sense i think the rockets have a general idea of 2-3 guys who they really want...but just like the draft, you have to look at everyone...and you have you're favorites but no guarantee

GS job just opened up as well...celtics/lakers/heat could be open too...who knows where the best will end up...so might as well interview everyone while we still can

I am on the fence, 50% hoping so and 50% thinking so.

At the end of the day I would be happy with whoever they hire, since they know what they are doing a hell of a lot more than me, that is for certain. At the same time though, of all the names mentioned, the only one that peaks my interest is Air Bud Sr. Hopefully the family ties will be enough to bring him in.

It would be one thing to interview 4 or 5 guys knowing who you want in the first place just to say later that you gave some other folks a shot. But it doesnt make sense to me to go to such extremes as interviewing 20-30 guys if you already know who you want.

Additionally, if they are waiting for the off season to see who might become available, why not just wait until then to start interviews?

The only good I see in this is that it gives the Rockets some degree of spotlight during a time in which they wouldnt be getting any given that their not in the playoffs. If this is the case, seems like their wasting a lot of peoples time for merely PR purposes.

It does seem somethings up the way this whole thing is coming about though.

You don't think the presence of a top center in Yao was a major factor in JVG taking the job. Also, JVG was NOT Les's first choice...let's not forget that. I think we can all agree JVG took the job because he wanted to coach Yao. Then Adelman had two stars in Yao and TMac.

Not sure that translates well to a team with no all-stars.

I usually eschew even looking at Threads like this, but - - 'I'm in'.:

Owner Alex wanted JVG while Rudy still coached. Adelman was in place before JVG was out of place. Thus, yes, I tend to agree.

To a point. I don't believe DM the GM will make the final call. LA will. But why this ridiculous coach-a-day interview process? The only possible answer I have is to appease agents. The organization cannot possibly be this scatterbrained to scattershot like this. Can it?

I still am waiting for Coach Cal to emerge; not necessarily positively.

Well of course they have their favorites, wouldn't that be the case with every team? Now, they do know who it will be? I really doubt that. They can have a list ranking their favorites, but they still have to discuss salary and philosophy. A coach may not like something he hears and withdraw his name, so it's not just up to Les.

I also don't think they're seriously just giving guys empty interviews. You really dont know where coaches or this team really stands until both sides sit together and talk. They're just making sure they consider everyone available and find their best fit.

i think they knew that they needed to go in another direction and had compiled a list during the season. now they are sifting through the list. too simple to 'reek' of a conspiracy IMO.

We are waiting for Stan Van Gundy (1st option). I think our second option is Budenholzer, but I'm just pulling this out of my a$$

heypartner - My apologies for not responding in the other thread, but time got away and I went for the topic ...Thanks for bringing this up again.

You make a good point about JVG/Yao and Rick/Yao&Tracy. Obviously Yao makes a team infinitely more attractive. But you know Les has shown a willingness to spend in the past. And Lord knows he's sitting pretty riding the Yao train.(with all the "side" business ventures that go with it) In addition, we're positioned nicely to make the necessary moves to eventually get where we want to go....lots of flexibility and enough talent signed at better than reasonable prices. We play our cards right and don't get hit with injuries...It's all good. We are definitely an attractive destination for players and coaches. Though our timeframe is different, I would assume we still reel in who we want.

I can't disagree that Les makes the final call....I'm just saying that this is Morey's script now. Of course he needs the OK from the producer.

And I agree with you on Coach Cal ......I'd rather not go there....Besides, I can't really see him working under Morey anyway.

I don't think minds are made up. I think some of the interviews are mere courtesies, and that they regard some candidates as more promsing than others, but I think the interviews are real and will ultimately be the factor in deciding.

If they're hoping SVG is getting canned, even so they'll need to talk to him to see how much animosity he has toward us. I wouldn't bank on him taking our job, especially since he might have other suitors.

Actually, this kind of remind me of how the Rockets work out and interview a ton of players before a draft, including those who will most likely not be in a position to be drafted by the Rockets, and say that they do so to gather info not just for the draft but also for future trades. For example, they had interest in Courtney Lee, didn't get to draft him, but traded for him when they got the chance.

Now of course you can't really trade head coaches, but maybe they are taking the opportunity not only to find the next head coach, but also for other purposes like getting in touch with candidates for possible future head coach opening if the guy they hire now doesn't work out or to fill assistant coaches spots or even front office spots. For example, if they hire a younger guy with no prior NBA head coach experience, it may be good to see if, say, a Mike Woodson or Kevin McHale would agree to be the lead assistant if he don't get a head gig. Someone like Sam Cassell, a relatively new assistant coach, may also be interested in getting a promotion or a raise, too, even if it's not to the head coaching position at this time.

    I can't fathom why they'd put on a dog-and-pony show.

Is it just me, or does it seem like Brad Stevens is a younger version of Jerry Sloan? Both coach(ed) maybe less talented, less athletic teams to over-perform.

    HC: Sloan
    HC-in-Waiting (or Assistant Coach): Stevens

That's what Mack Brown would do.

So does Morey keep a coaching stats metrics?

BTW, I don't think there is any rules against trading coaches. They just never do it.
