My quick thoughts -I would rather get Peterson over Quinn and maybe even Miller, since the fair market value and availability for FA CBs is so much higher than WOLB rush specialists. Champ Baileys don't come around often, and the going rate for mediocre CBs has been nose-bleed the last several years. Also, the chances of finding an excellent, near-ready CB later in that draft is a lot tougher than finding a rush specialist. -I think the organization is much more interested in getting a WOLB than secondary help. -If the Denver offers for a swap are really next year's 1st and Okoye or this year's 2nd and third.....I counter with this year's third, next year's second, and Okoye. Ultimately? I press to get it done, because filling the gaps with marginal starters is the wrong move. They've GOT to come away with a game changer in the first round. GOT TO. -I don't think this brass has the creativity or stones to pull it off. If the GARM is pissing and moaning about Morey, I don't want to think would they'd be saying about Smith. -It's not something we're even talking about....but I have a sinking feling we're going to find out that the Mitchell-Williams combo on the right side of the line isn't going to cut the mustard and we really are going to need to look around for either a stout NT in the middle or a bigger DT/DE type on the end. -Looking forward to the draft tonight, should be intriguing.
I enjoy your input. You should give us a running commentary on your thoughts about what's happening in tonight's draft.....
the way they've drug that dog-and-pony show out, the draft tonight will be just as exciting as the draft tomorrow. also, watching paint dry will be equally entertaining.
I think he meant his mock draft..... he should have put a link though... would love to see the misleading info
Trading up to #2 is going to require giving up next year's 1st round pick at the absolute minimum. According to the value chart (which I have no idea whether teams use), Denver would need to value Okoye as a 1st round pick in order for them to take your offer (in terms of getting equal value). But if looking purely at team needs and possible available players, I don't think Denver would bite on your offer due to their dire need for help on the DL and lack of elite DL prospects outside of the Top 10. If a trade with Denver does happen, I would rather take Dareus over Peterson and Miller even though all 3 would be great picks IMO. Dareus is an elite prospect who fills a big position need and I have ZERO confidence in Okoye/Cody/Mitchell playing DT in a 3-4, which is the position I believe makes or breaks a 3-4 defense.
For what it's worth, Bill Parcells has Aldon Smith rated as his second highest OLB prospect in the draft. And he's got Robert Quinn rated as his 5th highest DE (behind Watt, Bowers, Heyward, and Jordan). Again, take it for what its worth. The Parcells 3-4 is different than the Phillips 3-4, IIRC.
NFL Draft Expert Podcast: Dan Shonka says Aldon Smith may be 2011 NFL draft's biggest bust The OurLads.com general manager has spent nearly four decades involved in player personnel, including stints as a scout with Philadelphia, Washington and Kansas City, and he thinks anyone who takes Smith in the top half of the first round is going to regret it. "We might have to stand by ourselves on this, but we're not big Aldon Smith fans," Shonka says. "He's a guy that he had some really good, outstanding games, but they're few and far between. "To me, if you're gonna draft a guy in the first round, he should be a hell-bent-for-leather, tough, take-no-prisoners kind of guy, and we just don't see Aldon Smith as that kind of player." There's no doubt Smith looks like a great pass rusher at 6-foot-4, 263 pounds with 35-inch arms. And when you look at the numbers he put up - 17 sacks and 108 tackles in 23 games for the Tigers - it's obvious teams would be intrigued by his potential. http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2011/04/nfl_draft_expert_podcast_dan_s.html
Of this you can be assured, most fans will walk away from the Texan's upcoming draft shaking their heads. When clowns are in control everything comes out funny.
If look at the Texans defense, all of the LBs and DBs (outside of Glover Quin) are questionable. The Texans must draft these positions heavily and get by with what they have on the DL. I strongly suspect that the NT will be addressed in the 2012 draft. Ryans is recovering from a serious injury. Barwin is recovering from a serious injury and is playing a new position OLB. Cushing struggled last year playing inside LB. Unsure which roster LBs or DL can play the other OLB every down. Mark Anderson? Tim Jamison? Glover Quin is the only Texan DB who is average and he might be switching to safety.
like no worries points out, texans have too big a need in the secondary and LB position to take a DE. I suppose they could play him at DT since that's still a need but I don't think the texans are in position to pass up the glaring needs at LB and DE.
Where are the trade rumors coming from? Knowing the Texans luck or lack of, a year after Okoye is with another team, he will probably end up in the pro bowl. =/ But that would be nice, to move up. And I completely agree that the DT for a 3-4 is a crucial position and a total game changer, just look at the lions D-line. I found myself intrigued watching Lions games just to see what Suh would do. Linebackers for the 3-4, you can find them in the later rounds as they tend to be hybrids. If only the Texans staff had a way to make it to the steelers and patriots "war room" to see who they are eyeing. Can't wait for the draft, not all hope has been lost. Go Texans, let's get in there with the Ox.
LOL, that about seals it then. With the 11th pick of the 2011 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans select......Aldon Smith, from the University of Missouri.
haha...what are you guys thinking? The Texans always go against the grain...A QB or a receiver will be the 11th pick...
Are you kidding me? Do you really not realize that you can find a similar article "Scout X thinks so-and-so is a bust" for nearly every first-round candidate in the draft? EDIT: In about two seconds, I found this article from a former NFL scout who says he thinks Von Miller is a bust. I guess we should avoid him too, right? http://www.ninersnation.com/2011/3/9/2039709/2011-nfl-draft-is-von-miller-going-to-be-a-bust
Don't worry, I just created a package that requires 7 Tight Ends on offense so there's a big need there now - hint hint
