It's possible that they sold their card for .35 cents on the dollar. I've seen people do that. Probably needed money for "other things." Hey man, it's only Saturday four times out of the month. Maybe they are buying ramen noodles.
If someone is going to buy food on my dime, I'd prefer they bought wholesome, actual food (even if it is expensive) than sugary, starchy, processed junk food. (for a multitude of reasons: eating crap makes you sick... more health bills for tax payers down the line... and spending money on crap food supports that industry, I'd rather the money went to people who produce real food instead) But beyond that, I'd prefer it above either if they just bought the bare necessities. Wholesome food can be expensive, but not *all* of it is... the wholesome cheap food is usually the less tasty kind, heh
We "lose track" of billions of dollars in Afghanastan and people get all bent out of shape over a 140 dollar receipt that may or may not be real. Give me a *****'in break. What I find pathetic is all the government contractors I work with making 100-200 dollars in hour on the beltway.
/thread We have a WINNER! This is spot on and this topic shouldn't even be debated anymore but I have a feeling it will go on and it will probably get ugly.
Wholesome food is generally less expensive than processed food except for fresh produce. But overall a well thought out grocery list of "wholesome" food including produce, will be cheaper than preprepared or frozen. I don't see what this has to do with buying lobster and steak.
A while ago i was at Wal Mart and this black lady in front of me at the chekout line had a nice touch screen phone. She paid for her groceries with a Lone Star card. If you can afford a nice phone then you can afford to pay your own damn groceries. Perfect example of abusing the system.
Unfortunately this isn't true. We have corn subsidizes to thank for that, among other things. Yes, you can shop wholesome on a budget, it is possible, that much is true. Preprepared or frozen doesn't automatically mean it's crap, though. Because there are much worse food choices to me that can be made than lobster or steak, therefore while I'm upset that somebody on government assistance is buying 'luxury' food items (i.e. basically an admission that they don't need govt assistance to begin with), I'm not as upset as I would be if they had bought $140 worth of crappy junk food.
Ha, I'd like to know where you shop because in my experience wholeseome food is far more expensive than processed food.
Depends on what kind of 'wholesome food' you're buying. If you're getting it at whole foods, its probably pretty expensive. But a 50lb bag of rice, some chicken, and raw vegetables at kroger is most certainly not expensive. Many of the bare essential items like raw vegetables aren't even taxed.
 be careful.... there are some on this board that will turn that all around and say that food stamps are great for the economy... keep in mind 99% of people on food stamps vote democrat.... so when you offer more options on food stamps... that's move democrat votes.... You get an incentive for wanting to be poor. It can help keep people in office.
I've never met a family that lives on rice, chicken, and vegetables. Which of those do they have for breakfast?
It's not my fault they cant afford to eat. Have less babies. Work harder. Qualify for full financial aid and go to college and work full time.
What about the babies? Should they starve because their parents are poor? Plus, not everyone can just decide to work full time. That's kind of been an issue lately.
Bank of America and Lehman Bros lied about billions in bonuses. Goldman Sachs failed to tell clients how it put together the born-to-lose mortgage deals it was selling. These companies actions cost us billions and were paid back 100 cents on the dollar by U.S. taxpayers. But, the important thing is we all go into a RAGE about the idea of someone getting more than we think they deserve with food stamps. Hate the poor, fellate the rich....
