Haha. Possibly. To me that suggests all this was for themselves? Surely you're not gonna try to profit off Mountain Dew?

As an economist-in-training, I find it amusing when free-marketers attack the tax money being spent on the "welfare state" while the equally wasteful amount being spent to subsidize the beef to the point where it is possible for people on food stamps to mass-buy them is what shocks me (and barely passes muster in any of these policy debates).

I think of the externalities of beef production (a quick example---5214 gallons of water required to make one pound of California beef) and then I think it was entirely possible for this guy to buy 12 steaks. wow. talk about an efficient use of resources.

back to the topic at hand, I honestly think if you're going to go on food stamps, then yes, they should restrict certain items. but for god's sake, everyone applying for stamps needs to have a basic course in personal finances too. I do think that there are probably so many people stuck in financial hell because they don't know how to make a budget or how expansive credit card debt really is. the credit card companies won't like it, but they're basically a tax on financial stupidity at this point.

Of the money that is allocated to welfare, how much is systematically given to the same individuals year in and year out?
This is complete crap and exactly whats wrong with our country. It is the citizens money and it will continue to be, just as the massive debt belongs to the tax payer. Electing officials to office does not give them carte blanche to do whatever they feel.

If someone takes a handout, they should be treated like a child. One of the best programs we have is WIC. Food stamps should be setup in the same manner.

Normal people everywhere discern like that, but I can't really translate it into too much of a grudge against those who don't. After all this is probably exactly why they need food stamps, and your parents don't. You don't get rich by spending, and those who don't understand this will meet their maker some day.

I worked at HEB and I would cringe whenever people would use WIC coupons. It would take twenty minutes per checkout, plus the time to straighten out their erroneous arguments about the limited selection of WIC. Maybe it's a more responsible program socially but it doesn't seem like a practical alternative to food stamps to me. Not that you were saying it was.

Since when? We are talking about America, right?

I saw a congressman (sorry, don't remember who) say in an interview (paraphrasing): "It would be easy for me to just do what my constituents want me to do...but I've got other things to think about."

Food stamps that means you're able to buy food. Lobster and steak are food so tell me whats the problem again.

I think I know what people are going to say Im not paying money for people to eat that well, but I think thats up the government to decide.

Why would you rather them buy expensive food? Food stamps are about keeping people from starving in times of dire need.

I am basically convinced the receipt is from someone who bought the food stamps off of the actual recipient for pennies on the dollar.

I agree thats what Food stamps are for, but if a person wants to spend all their food stamps on lobster and steak I dont have a problem with it. If they're that dumb I say let them be because its their stomach whos going to be hungry for the rest of the month.

Why do you not have a problem with it? I am not sure if you know this but people cannot go without food for a month, and if they find ways to eat without food stamps then they don't need them in the first place.

The reason I dont have a problem is because its their food stamps. I feel like I dont have the right to tell them what to spend their food stamps on only the government does.

You are making my head hurt. I don't really see your logic making the distinction since no one is asking you to take away food stamps personally.

The government is your money. If the government has a right to worry about where your money goes, why don't you?

You're not asking to take them away but you're saying they shouldnt be able to buy lobster and steak which I disagree with I guess we can just leave it at that.
