For a FS household of 5 with income of zero their monthly allotment would be $793. If 4 of the 5 are children under 10, steak and lobster would not be difficult with careful budgeting. Especially, if you do not spend the entire $793 in one month, the remaining total rolls over.
I think we should be proud to live in a country where poor folks can surf & turf. American Exceptionalism FTW. Love it or leave it kids.
141 is chump change compared to the amount bilked from the government by the wealthy. that's where the outrage should be directed to, but too many have been brainwashed to demonize the poor.
I'm gonna go ahead and say that is screwed up. Food stamps should be limited to staple items. I'm all for helping people and food stamps are one way to combat hunger. But when someone is buying lobster and steaks, it's abuse imo. Since this is indirectly coming from our pockets, keep it efficient. Potatoes, bread, fruits, etc. Foods that yields the best nutrition/filling/portion/price combo. Lobsters ain't it. Even with the client example. Sucks to not have luxury food items to impress a client but I'm sure it sucks infinitely more not to have any food at all. You are correct. But add to the fact that the person can afford a decent scanner to scan the receipt, I would bet a dollar the person is just abusing the system.
This is what I was going to say, make it like WIC. I see this all too often as well. I remember a friend of mine would fund his neighborhood cookouts with his food stamps and then brag about being able to buy shrimp, ribs, etc. and what not with them when I am positive this is not their purpose.
That's bs. If you treat a man like a child, he'll behave like a child. Denying people some basic self-respect will leave them in a position of dependency and they'll stay on the welfare rosters. And I find it annoying when people continue to think of their tax money as their money. It's the government's money now. You have some responsibility as a citizen to oversee your government and make sure it is handling it's business properly. But, that's not your money anymore. The government had decided for its own purposes to provide a safety net with its money. You obviously don't care for the safety net. I hope you don't ever have to use it. Though, in my experience, it's the ones who have the most disdain for the safety net that are most likely to abuse it.
there are much more jerks in the world than valid people cutting you off for an emergency. I don't know how much one is allocated in monthly food stamps, but i have a hard time that it's a high enough limit that you can buy said items and last an entire month.
I get the feeling he voted for J. Alfredo Jackson-Gonzalez Wadsworth, who has promised a Lobster roll and Chateau LaTour for every welfare recipient, provided that they can't find an additional supply of Caddies.
I understand the receipt has little context, but my comment was derived from personal experience. I've seen people do this with my own eyes, and they weren't buying ramen. Now I can't guarantee that's what this person was doing, but it would seem odd that a person on food stamps would spend 141 dollars of their monthly allotment on 1 or 2 meals.
I hope no one thinks the person who purchased the steak and lobster is eating it. When this is done, it is for the intent to sell the steak and lobster to people to indirectly get cash for the food stamps. This guy came into my dad's shop one time and tried to sell him a bunch of steaks for half off one time.
Learn something everyday. I always thought WIC, AFDC and food stamps were the same thing. I've seen people use debit card type cards for things like the above and I was under the impression they could only work for certain items that say "WIC" on them.
Agree context is important and for that matter we don't know if this was just a mistake on the receipt, as I've had receipts where it listed the method of payment and also coupons as wrong, or if this image was faked.
