D&D bound? I had a discussion about this article with a friend a while back. http://www.salon.com/life/pinched/2010/03/15/hipsters_food_stamps_pinched It's about people on food stamps buying high-end, organic foods. He was really pissed about it. I, however, would rather people buy expensive, healthy food than cases of ramen. I can see how you can be ticked about people feeling entitled to luxury foods on your dime, but hey, if they blow their budget on one trip to Whole Foods, they're SOL, amirite? I guess the solution would be to set up some kind of basic foods distribution instead of giving people freedom to buy whatever they wanted. Stick to stuff like rice, beans, veggies, breads, maybe some other kinds of stuff suited for the elderly or small children as well. If you're on food stamps, the last thing you should be doing is buying super expensive foods (thereby dooming yourself to hunger), and on the same note, nor should you be throwing your credits away on nutrient-empty corn-based processed garbage. (which are basically treats/snacks, not "meals"... and treats/snacks are something somebody on food stamps shouldn't be concerned with IMO)
oh and move to the D&D if needed i was not to sure... just thought it was interesting. and i like lobster
lmao, i was seriously trying to look up what are roman noodles, took me some time to realize you meant to write 'ramen' anyway, yes, if you're on food stamps, you should buy ramen only
Poor people should subsist on junk food. This incident in a town I've never heard of makes me so angry at the whole system! I'm tired of these fat cats and their $9 lobsters that they cook themselves.
I don't see the big deal. Or, more specifically, I don't see the need to go and hold the hand of every welfare recipient like they're children. If that's what they want to spend it on, that's fine by me. This is anecdotal (and out of context). If you query a database and found that 80% of all food stamps is spent on lobster, maybe some policy change is necessary.
Yeah Food stamps are a touchy subject. I worked at a grocery store for 2.5 years in high school and it always upset me how the system is abused. It sucked to see my parents who did well be so cost conscious with meats, groceries etc. They always clipped coupons and often turned me down if things were not on sale. Then you see people with food stamps buy veal, rib eye, bacon wrapped filets, jumbo shrimp, Borden milk etc without a care in the world. The worst was helping people out with their groceries bought with food stamps and load them into a Cadillac or a BMW. I think a program like WIC is better. Here take your pick of the least expensive cereal, cheese, bread, etc. The worst was this thing called AFDC. Which stood for Aid for families with dependent children. It was basically a debit card which would allow you to withdraw money. I would see tons of people buy beer and cigarettes with it. Rather than make the purchase with this account you withdraw money and pay for the excluded items at the end. The money was meant for diapers, clothes, meds etc.
I don't know. If you've reached a point where you are relying on food stamps to pay for your basic needs and you are blowing your budget on big ticket items for meals (steak and lobster is really high dollar items) perhaps the system is flawed. Aren't we hoping these people are going to get OFF food stamps? If they are so poor at managing their finances that this money is being blown like this that would indicate to me they aren't moving in the right direction. With all that said, this is one receipt with no context to it. We don't know anything about the person who used these stamps other than they bought enough steak and lobster to have one nice meal. What if the father in this family is a salesman who has struggled horribly for a few years and now needs to entertain a client that will get him back on his feet? Buying steak and lobster for a meal could be a big reason he gets off food stamps. This looks bad if you assume that the person using the stamps to buy this steak and lobster is a dead beat degenerate who's doing drugs and abusing the system with no intention of ever getting off the government's dime. There are people on food stamps that you would never guess.
This guy is just scamming the system, I doubt he needs the food stamps at all. He probably doesn't pay taxes for one reason or the other but still has some form of steady income. It happens.
There is no way for anyone in this thread to know whether your post is true or not, but there is also no reason for you to assume that it is. This is similar to people assume that anyone who ever cuts them off on the road is a jerk who can't drive but when they cut people off on the road it is because they are in a hurry or an emergency. There is ZERO context to this. Just a receipt for a few items.
