Extortion for the car dealership owner and killing the immigrant for not being able to pay for the trip. They also kill randomly.
Why not use the 'crises' to add to the already growing INS/Border Patrol industry? It'll create jobs, and give the economy a nice punch with all the technology that will need to be bought. The US successfully created a bloated Homeland Security Branch, why not bloat up the Border Patrol? It seems an obvious answer.....branding them terrorists and taking the fight to them in their own country. But it's more complicated than that. We can't afford to pi$$ of Mexico because soon we WILL be welcoming their immigrants to fill the void once the 'Boomers retire and we have a labor gap.
Mexico has never been well developed. The government, police, and military are very corrupt and have often been in bed with the cartels. High ranking officials have been found to be working with the cartels. With all the money the cartels make from the drug trade, and nobody willing or able t stop it, it's gotten out of control.
What's disturbing is how quickly this happened. It gives one the distinct impression that the Joker was right in The Dark Knight.
yea,..sigh ...the real life pics of the gore and killings is unreal, it's like the narco drug lords will try to out do another. . .I came across it once, and I'll try to never again...
My last response was given without thought between clients. Obviously drugs are a problem: drug abuse, selling, rich criminals who have $$ to bribe officials and hire gun men, American drug consurmer demand etc. However, I should have added that this is not merely a drug problem, OR EVEN MAINLY A DRUG PROBMEM, though the American Media/Establishment would like you to believe that. This is another of the many severe problems created by unregulated "free" market ideology. With NAFTA Mexico has been flooded with government subsidized American beans and corn that has driven millions of Mexican off their little land plots. Under the wonders of the unfettered market, these products cost less than the folks working their own land, no matter how hard, can produce at. In Mexico, nothing generally stops millions of peasants from growing a little corn and beans in front of their shacks. The problem is that you can't live on just corn and beans indefinitely. Traditionally they take their little excess corn and beans into town occaionally or even weekly to trade for cooking oil and perhaps eggs and meat etc. Now that the subsidized NAFTA corn has flooded the market, the can't produce enough cheap corns and beans to trade. I know the wonders of "comparative advantage" etc. but unless you are a libertarian it is heart breaking to see people suffer and or starve in this life while waiting for the market to work its magic. I know, libertarians, tough ***t for them, , but until you have a completely unfettered free market in people it leads to starvation, immigration, drug running etc. all of which are externalities to the Cargills and other corporations or commodity traders.
I have to give Glynch credit. I wasn't expecting a "free marketers are to blame for Mexican drug violence" post.
Do some research, bud. Facts matter. Not everything can be explained by free markets 101 comforting as it might be to some to have all the answers in a few simple theories. I can give you some links to studies etc. wrt to Mexico, peasants, immigration etc, if you could maybe get past markets uber alles and Ron Paul.
In your world everything can be explained by pointing to the lack of a communist world state. Psycho Mexican drug cartels are bashing people's heads in with sledge hammers? Why, it's because of free trade agreements!!!!
I have some friends in Mexico who say that two things would begin to curtail the violence if implemented. The death penalty and abortions.
They have already taken all of that person's money to act as a coyote (human smuggler) and that person has no family that can be extorted once they are in America, so they cut their costs and obligations by bashing the person's head in.
Roxran made it sound like he had seen it personally, as in "I was driving through Mexico when I noticed a series of headless bodies on the side of the road..."
Let me try. Extreme near level starvation will cause people to do desperate things, even illegal things. Selling drugs leads to crazy things. Drug wars with massive fire fire leads to crazy things. War leads to brutality. Drugs and wars toghether leads to extreme cruelty. I know it is simple to say sledge hammers and free market what do they have to do with each other? Nuff said. Think. Do reseach on life in Mexico etc.
Do you believe that if the whole world was able to revert to being subsistence farmers and hunters/gatherers that violence would cease? I don't understand your position. Do you believe we should prevent any and all economic progress from here on out in order to prevent some good people from going on psychotic murder sprees because cheap food floods their economy?
It is sad that a large country like Mexico cannot handle the criminal gangs within its own boarder. Even after using the military the government still cannot chase the gangs into hiding, it just shows how useless the mexico government really is.
I think you are being a little closed minded and glynch is being way too generalizing. But what I think glynch is trying to say is... Highly efficient American Famers' crops exported to Mexico -> Mexican farmer's can't compete -> More poor people Mexico -> People lose faith in Govt -> Drug lords try to take advantage of situation and offer people jobs producing drugs or trafficking humans -> Drug cartels get rich -> Govt tries to fight back -> lots of (innocent) people die... I don't think we can blame NAFTA for this but it did play a role in shaping the economic environment of mexico.
