I don't understand how it is possible in a relatively developed Western country that it descends into a state of such violence and chaos in modern times. Why are they not able to get this under control? Sad.
It's not about being developed or undeveloped. It's about the difference in income levels between the poor and the rich. The blue collar and the white collar. And Mexico is very third world in that aspect. This savage behavior is merely a microcosm of the desperation and frustration that people like Thadeus feel when observing the opportunities the rich have and the poor do not... and a lot of it is justified if you put yourself in their shoes. Cutting up and hacking innocent people may seem barbaric to us, but it is the only way of life these poor, uneducated Mexicans know. There will always be a black market for drugs in America, and unfortunately that means drug cartels marking their territories and sending messages to other drug cartels. More importantly, why should America put more energy into stopping these people - what will they get out of it? More jobs? Only temporarily. More oil contracts? Nope. A better atmosphere for their children growing up? Who cares right. That is the sad state of a nation with no character, no morals and no shame. I wouldn't be surprised if the poor in America step up and revolt in a couple years. Especially around major financial centers like Wall Street or big city downtown's. This is only the beginning of problems caused by an overpopulated planet and capitalism... where there are far more losers than winners.
So you think the solution is easy, but we just don't care enough due to a lack of character morals and shame? Can't get with that. This problem is evolving, and going to take tough decisions in a time where too many tough decisions are already being made. The public will be less tolerant of the situation the minute those tough decisions go into effect due to the sheer difficulty in dealing with it (read more American deaths). No one wants or needs that right now, but things aren't getting better, are they? We shall see. As much as I hate to admit it/think it, it almost seems that things are going to get much worse for Calderon and those that would try to hold power over the cartels. It's hard to imagine them being able to stop this judging by past results, but who knows what the numbers / details in terms of that true capability, or more importantly the actual desire to do this legitimately? The resolve required is substantial. Bottom line seems to be that as long as they are only trying to take over Mexico then no one will blink. Sad, but true. Now, once they become officially overtly in control? Yeah, those are the ones that the US and even international community seem to go after... eventually. The cartels also know this, and I'm sure will attempt to control from behind the scenes as long as they can, by exerting pressure on seemingly well-meaning people in power to keep the power in their own hands without drawing international and/or military attention, but that charade will get more difficult with time. The onus and pressure is on the current government in Mexico, and while they/some may legitimately be trying to do something about it, they aren't going to get much external help... especially when it's difficult for outsiders to see who is truly fighting the good fight over the long run.
Good questions. This is ****ing up my plans in life. I was always thinking in retirement of at least spending summers in my favorite place in Mexico to avoid the Houston heat and have fun.
Adherence to the rule of law (like religion on the other pages) requires the public to buy in to the idea that the institutions are best, and fair for everyone. Once the trust is broken, self interest can easily overtake the sense of the greater good. The institutions are rarely rich enough or pervasive enough to control the masses without their voluntary participation. Absolute Monarchies, abusive theocratic regimes, autocratic governments, crony ism, nations of great wealth disparity, corrupt governments... all will fail
Better solution, add more drones along the border 24/7 with marines on stand by if infiltration is seen. This will quickly reduce the immigration and drug crossing on foot. Money well spent, instruct the marines to shoot to kill if the immigrants are carrying loaded assault rifle or weapons while transporting drugs or escorting immigrants.
If they do that then good luck trying to shoot this bad boy down. <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/TpFGonYaF14" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Yeah, because drones that have been known to kill civilians on a fairly frequent basis are a really good idea to hunt not-so-obviously armed gang members. Not to mention the fact that, given all the hoopla for the Second Amendment, your qualification for killing would qualify a significant amount of Americans to immediate execution. In such a lawless state, I would not be surprised if Mexican civilians were packing heat, I mean, I'm kinda an anti-gun guy, but I'd consider it if the police were getting executed by gang members.
Prohibition breeds violence, this is a sadly predictable outcome of our drug and immigration policies.

A significant number of Americans are transporting drugs or illegal immigrants across the US-Mexico border while armed?

Ok, maybe a dumb question but why are the drug lords targeting civilians? Why would they kill a random car salesman or random guatemalean trying to get into the U.S?
