Quite a few. In fact every championship winning team had a starting point guard and was by definition championship caliber. Then there are the championship caliber teams that never managed to actually win a championship. So this august group would include the likes of John Paxson, BJ Armstrong, Ron Harper, Jason Williams, Derek Fisher, Brian Shaw, Lindsey Hunter, Avery Johnson, Kenny Smith; and that is just the non-star starters for actual championship winning teams going back to 1991. If you expand it to include championship caliber teams that didn't end up on top, you add the likes of Matt Maloney to the mix. Any definition that includes Brian Shaw just cannot be that impressive.

Fair point and nice list. And I would say each of those point guards deserve credit for his role in his team's championship run. Yes, even Brian Shaw.

To say that they just rode the coattails of better players, like D'Antoni seems to be implying with Rondo, is to dismiss the importance of the collective effort in winning at the highest level.

You mean at Kentucky? Cause no he wasn't. He was a rookie when the Celts won the championship. And 95% of his offense is driving in transition or off a screen or in iso, so no he would be just as effective of a scorer..his assists would come down without the big 3 to knock down jumpers

I agree with the other two but Shawn Marion is not a system player. He was an all-star averaging 21.2 points and 9.5 rebounds before Dantoni became head coach.

That system does play a huge part in inflating many players' shooting percentages and assist numbers.

He would probably put up Johnny Flynn numbers with a slightly higher scoring percentage if he would have played for Minny. he would probably also average 10 assist a game just passing the ball to kevin love alone.

I don't even know why Dantoni has a job. Do his teams ever play defense? Loser.

Don't mind him. He's just mad because Adelman's about to take his job.

When Rondo is in the open court and blowing by your guards I don't think it makes much difference who the 4 guys trailing behind him are.

    Geeeesh

No he wasn't a freak'n rookie the year they won a ring

Rondo had such little impact on Boston that they tanked the season in order to get the top pick

Some of you guys need to stay off the board

Whats asinine is the idea that a marginal guard who lucks up and plays with three hall of famers somehow makes him a hall of famer

I guess we should put Matt Malony up there with Rondo

I'd rather be a fan of the t-wolves than the knicks. That team is all out of wack.

How can you go from a tough defensive minded team in the 80s and 90s to chuck and duck.

Dantoni needs another steve nash to run that kind of offense.

Damn, never thought about that, although not ideal fits, that Knick roster is better suited for Adelman than for D'Antoni, the day they traded for Melo is the day where you can trace the source of D'Antoni's eventual firing.

And I came here to post that D'Antoni has a better chance of coaching in Minny next year than of Rondo being traded there.

I'd like to see Danny Ainge think the same way as D'Antoni and make Rondo available cheap.
