I agree that we should not trade him for any top 5 pick. Maybe it is this year for a player not on our radars. Probably not like you said.

Another point I would like to clear up for those who don't think we can get a potential franchise player for Martin. We obviously can't trade him for "sure things" like Lebron was. Or Greg Oden(oops) and Durant were. Or even a Derrick Rose was. Even the most incompetent of talent evaluators would hang on to those guys.

However guys like Brandon Roy, Chris Paul or Dwayne Wade weren't necessarily seen as sure fire franchise players until they proved to be. Those are the kind of players we have a chance to trade up for.

No. I am not saying we won't but I was just interested
to see if we ever did. In the Morey Era.

    CX,

I think you nailed it, and I believe that is exactly what they will do, try to flip Martin and possibly Scola.

Since both are very good complimentary players, but not alpha dogs, sometimes you can pick one up by trading your quality high end role players.

    This.

Also I think the FO plan is to tank. Not exactly tank but to play young guys and build on their potential.

Of course Morey is not going to say that. Who would? First the NBA would not be happy with a team admitting to that and then the fans of said team will likely not show up to any games. If your team starts trading away veteran players for prospects though it is rebuilding and likely your team gets much worse so it looks like tanking.

To move up takes a lot. I think it would take more than just Martin. Likely Scola too and one of our first round picks.

Martin is the type you want playing alongside your "franchise" player. Lets say that franchise player is Howard(cause i feel that he will be leaving Orlando this offseason). You trade Martin away, you are basically bringing him over to the same type of situation that he will be leaving in Orlando. Not enough scorers.

Is that really worse, or even different, than "trading away veteran players for prospects" to "tank"? The only difference I see is depending on who we traded up for, we might not end up bad enough to "tank" if he turns out to be a true franchise player.

That's true. We could get lucky and draft a true superstar player and if that happens it will be a great trade.

If instead we get a player that doesn't live up to his potential than still it could work out for us because you can still sell 'Potential' to other teams and I doubt Morey will hang onto a bust very long.

I think the term tank is always looked at as a bad thing. For me it is synonymous with rebuilding. The main thing here is that teams instead put the development of players before winning, and I think the Rockets proved that when they got rid of Adelman. That players reaching their full potential is more important right now to this franchise than a few wins.

Thats when teams get into tank mode. I don't think anyone wants to lose on purpose, but when you trade away proven players like Scola and Martin for unproven players you understand that your team may drop a few levels in quality.

hard to believe a top ten scorer is not worth a top 5 pick, but it might be true

I don't believe it. I think JayGoogle is severely underestimating Martin's trade value. Martin + Scola + 1st (as he suggested) is the type of trade you offer for an established star, not a draft pick. We should be able to come close to acquiring a top five pick with just Martin, though it might take a bit more.. certainly not Scola though, IMO.

Haven't you heard? It's all the rage around town. As it turns out, he DID say the "A" word. THE "A" WORD!!! And now they even had to call up Mr. Wolf to run the massive cover up campaign. Can you imagine? Despicable.

This is the false question. You will not win championship with any pick any year when the team is run by men without courage and without heart.

If we want to get a star through the draft then Scola and Martin will to be traded. Then we will need to wait unti this young team grows.

If we want to trade for an established star then we need to hold on to Scola and Martin to compliment that star. Otherwise we will have to wait years until we build a solid supporting cast and by that time the established star will be out of his prime.

Or we can go for the no superstar Detroit model. Lowry, Martin and Scola are solid complimentary players. We have a solid bench as well in Dragic, Lee, Pat and Hayes. We just need two guys who are on the same lvel as Lowry, martin and Scola to play at 3 and 5. They dont need to be superstars. This is far easier to achieve then trying to land a superstar.

We can fight it as long as we want, but there's only one way out...

This would be bad strategy by Morey because it relies on unique situation and luck.

Situations like Celtics give #5 for Ray Allen come about from very unique circumstance. How likely is it that team ready for contention will have high lottery pick to give us? Situations like Knicks give #2 Aldridge and #9 Noah for Eddy Curry are result of rare horrifically stupid management. How likely is it that Morey will run into another GM this stupid?

There is another way to get top five pick by simply putting matters into your own hands: TANK. Heypartner was right that already having a high lotto pick was the way Dallas got Dirk, Portland got Aldridge, NJ got Williams. Morey needs to put Rockets in position to get high pick of their own.

You can say all you want about how Morey would have stolen Aldridge away from the Bulls...but without the #4 pick, Morey is not getting the Aldridge pick.

Roy was traded for the next pick in the draft...#6 for #7. The Rockets tried desperately to trade up for Roy just a few spots...and failed. That is proof that you cannot trade up into the Top 5 easily without a high pick that year.

Dude...there are how many GMs in the NBA...every year ... e v e r y GM tries to trade into the top 5 without a Top 5 pick...it doesn't happen. You proved it in this thread.

You proved yourself as a dreamer like all of us. You are not alone.

Isn't one of the things that came out during Adelman's departure the fact that Morey wanted to trade a bunch of their prospects in order to move up and draft Rubio?

Agreed with the OP's line of thinking. I have suspected this myself given the fact that Kevin Martin's trade value is at an all-time high.

Should be interesting to see if this theory has any legs. I love Kevin Martin but if the chance to grab a Derrick Williams type comes along it would be hard to say pass.

Yes!!! Dreamin is finally awake!!;) This is one of the best post i have seen on Clutchfans over the past 2 weeks. The terms rebuild and tank should have nothing to do with the Rockets, currently.
