So I am moving back to Houston after 7 years of working out of state. I used to live out in the Katy area, but my place of employment is in downtown Houston. So the drive from my parents house would get old...very fast

I want to find something inside the loop but since I have been out of touch with the areas, I dont remember/know how some areas are, and where to avoid.

I was thinking somewhere around the Galleria area, and into the Rice village area, but I am not sure. I dont want to spend more that $1000 /mo if possible but if I have to I will go over.

Anyone got any tips? Anyone commute downtown from the 610 area? Where do you live? ...etc

    All help is much appreciated

    Thanks

You really need to narrow your scope/preference in neighborhood down.

Right now, you're casting a gigantic net, even saying 'inside 610', let alone 'inside the beltway'.

Well I was thinking somewhere along the Heights area, Galleria, Memorial and somewhere off of 59/buffalo speedway.

I really dont know where the good places are to start honestly. I have been so out of touch with the area, I have no idea what has changed for better or worse.

i live in the galleria area and i've never had any problems commuting to downtown in the mornings or afternoons. 15 minutes on memorial and you're there.

That price range might be tough in the Washington area (close to heights). There are a lot of nice ones near Washington on Studemont, but pricey.

For your price range, you should look at Medical Center.

Well, what is important to you?

Commute time, walkability, traffic, neighborhood safety, local attractions, bars/clubs, green space...?

As a start, I would suggest avoiding the Galleria (horrid traffic & overpriced IMO).

    9900 Memorial.

This place is pretty solid. Good location (1 exit from 610 on I10)

    this. this. this.

    i can't stress this enough.

between the cost of gas, paying for parking, and maintaining a vehicle, living on the rail line was the BEST decision I ever made when I worked downtown.

easily saved me a few hundred bucks a month, which more than made up for the difference in rent between living near downtown vs. out in the sticks.

plus the time you gain from being able to walk or bike your way damn near everywhere is very nice.

I live in the Woodlake area of Westchase (Westheimer & Gessner) for 560/month. A new Randall's just opened within walking distance. I initially wanted to live closer to 610, but ended up loving the location.

I now live in Rice Military off Washington, one block from Memorial Park. For that price range I doubt you'd find anything really nice in the area. You may need to pony up a few hundred dollars more a month.

I-10 is a breeze from there though, although it does back up at the 45 interchange but it's only a 3-5 minute drive to that point. Memorial Drive would be your best route from that area. My drive all the way to Federal Road for work MAYBE takes 20 minutes at the most. I'm always going the opposite way of traffic and love it.

    Inner Loop UNITE!

Dang yo, I could throw a rock from my office and hit your place.

There's a pretty nice complex over here that looks new, Ventura Lofts I think?

They don't publish their rates though, jerks.

I might be in the market for this area before long. Anything else you can say about what's near? (bars, restaurants, parks, gyms, other shopping, etc.)

Mostly safety really, then would come ease of commute. I know anything inside the the area is going to be hell come traffic hour, but just something that is manageable. Safety is my primary concern though as I will be going to work around 3am and such.

    Nicest... grocery store... ever.

The one they replaced felt really old with narrow aisles, the new one is really nice.

Is this in a complex? If so, which one? I'm going to need a cheap apartment on the west side in the next few months.
