At this point, I'm over and done with Yao. His legs will find a way to break even with limited PT.

I hope I never have to see him again as a player in a Rockets red.

I'd say sign him for the minimum, and give him back up minutes, and it makes good business sense as well.. chinese dollars..

Why? everyteam has a game that makes a bit too much money sitting on the far end of the bench (in recent history see; Brian Cook -$3M, Jared Jefferies - $6M, and now Hasheem Thabeet - $5M)

Now you are telling me you object to having a 7"6 All-Star caliber center filling that role?

I just don't see him able to contribute anymore. The 24-minute, no b2b, experiment failed. Yes, 15-20 mpg as a backup would be ideal, but his legs are too fragile. I'm not sure Yao would want to return to a much-reduced role and a huge paycut.

Finally we have a winner. I love it when in the midst of a bunch of stupid chatter somebody with some insight post an intelligent thought. Kudos to you poster!

Anybody who really thinks Yao is signing for the vet minimum is a dreamer. Anybody who thinks it's a real possibility is pretty stupid. If Yao is not recovered from his injury he will get nothing and if he is you can bet there will be more than a few wishing, hoping and dreaming he will take the FULL MLE. And probably a couple of risk takers offering more.

Also make no mistake about it. Yao loves the Rockets and wants to stay here. But if they are offering the minimum and some other team is offering a 3 year deal starting at 10 mil. Loyalty goes out the window. He is honorable and loyal. He is not stupid. There may be some stipulations on his contract, okay there surely will be but as Ziggy said the opening bid starts at the MLE and expect it to not end there. Yao will get money and the only thing he is offering Houston is possibly a better deal than others but minimum is not reality!

yao can still be a valuable assset if he can finally fully get healthy. as probably can fully recover by now as much time as he had off.

    What's Yao's fair market value?
He is injury prone and one away from career ending, which can happen anytime. OTOH, he is a highly skilled 7'5 center. Any team desperately in need of a center could still use him.

I will say this given that it doesnt look like the Rockets will be competing next year for the playoffs let alone the championship whatever team Yao signs on (if its not the Rockets) i am going to root for them to win it all come playoff time (noteable exception: if he signs with the Mavs or Jazz i am going to go sit in the corner and cry)

Except that Yao is guaranteed to not finish out the season. To me resigning Yao is like getting Roy. The only reason I see Yao getting resigned is because of Les' personal wants.

Personally, I've been too drained emotionally with Yao over the years. I don't know how many of you are not tired of Yao's drama.

Also like Ziggy pointed out with the MLE, that's far too much for damaged goods. I wouldn't take that chance with him. Let contending team like Heat, Celts, or Lakers overpay him and take that chance. If he wins a ring with them, then good for him. Just as long as he doesn't stay in Houston. Houston + Yao = injury.

I think Les, with his Chinese business, might be one of the owners willing to bid on the high end for Yao's service. Also, I think when Yao said "equal" offer, he probably didn't mean strict dollar to dollar, my guess is if Rox offers 1m or less, he would still consider it's an equal offer, if the starting bid is MLE.

And if there is no longer a MLE in the next contract, what happens?

I don't think Yao would mind low salaries. 4-5M/year and we have one of the best centers in the league.

    We don't know that.

But I do hope Yap signs with another team. It's time to move forward.

It's not about fair market value. If Yao is healthy and through with his injuries he worth Max dollar and more. If Yao is going to get injured again the minimum sounds about right. But as Morey said in this league you have to take risks. The Mavericks took risk on Chandler and it paid off big. The Rockets took a minor risk and lost out. If they would have thrown cash and a ist round pick MJ's way they could have probably got chandler instead of Dallas but Morey didn't want to take that risk so Dallas is winning in the playoffs and Houston is sitting home watching.

Okay that's another topic but my point is someone will take a risk on Yao that may give him more than his Market value at present but if Yao pans out may turn out to be a bargain. Yao is the type of player you take that risk on because you know he will everything he can to play. He is not looking for a free paycheck but he will take it he gets injured. Plus he is a crowd pleaser and sales jerseys and gets you inside China for better deals. Signing Yao is not about market value. It's about hope for better days. It's rolling the dice on making your team a real championship contender. Don't you think New Jerys owner witl roll those dice. Yao and Deron would instantly become contenders. ANd there are others who will feel the same way.

LOL. Good stuff. Usually in this case though you just can't help but go back unless she cuts ties or you find that girl that allows you to move on. We'll see where that leaves us when season starts

It's funny. If Morey fans scream getting rid of Adelman was about "rebuiding", how exactly can you defend bringing Yao back another year? Shouldn't he be the one who had been let go?
