Injured Rockets center Yao Ming says he has no desire to leave Houston

By Associated Press, Friday, April 22, 6:21 AM

BEIJING — Rockets center Yao Ming says he hopes to continue playing for Houston after his contract expires this summer.

Yao says his priority is recovering from the stress fracture to his left ankle that kept him out of all but five games this season. He told reporters in his hometown of Shanghai on Thursday that he hopes to begin workouts once he returns to the U.S.

Yao says his professional future depends on his injury and the outcome of talks between the NBA and its union over a new collective bargaining agreement.

He says he wouldn’t consider moving if conditions offered by another team were similar to those given by the Rockets.

With Rick Adelman’s departure this week, Houston is searching for a third coach since 2003.

Doesn't most every player say this?

Yes, except for players that don't.

Of course, you try to get him for cheap. He's the only All-Star caliber player (when healthy) who you could possibly get on the cheap. Sorry to hurt people's feelings, but anyone who wouldn't take Yao for the vet minimum is an idiot.

But note the bold part of the OP. All it takes is one team to offer him a lot more money to completely negate the rest of his statement.

Lots of people on this board argue that we should cut ties with Yao even if he comes cheap because his presence on the roster will impede the rebuilding process. I still don't see the logic of this thinking.

Yeah most players do say that. But to me, Yao isn't Boozer or Brand. Yao comes of as a very sincere individual.

It is a false sense of hope. IF he comes back IF he stays healthy. It is like pining over a girl who will crush your heart. You just have to quit it cold turkey.

So given Houston and team X's offers are equal, Houston wins.

    Not shocking news.

I'm guessing team X's offers will be larger than ours, personally.

The logic is based off the beginning of the 2010-2011 season where he was allowed 24 minutes per game. Him being in the game disrupted the Rockets from forming chemistry, and having him sit on the bench for all the fans to have false hope of him returning to his former self isn't going to improve the team either.

How much should we play him if he actually does come back?

    Back-up only?

    15 minutes?

Basically Yao said unless another team throws a s**tload of money at him then he will take the Rockets offer.

He didn't say he would stay no matter what, he said he would stay barring a great offer from another team.

I think most of us knew this from the start.

IF he comes back CHEAP, that means NOBODY (in the FO and the coaching staff--who cares what the fans think) is hoping he can be back as his former self. Just treat him as a serviceable over-the-hill backup big man, not much differently as Brad Miller. I'd take a half healthy Yao over Miller as my third string center over Miller every day.

This is not the beginning of the 2010-2011 season. Nobody has any hope of getting the old Yao back.

Dude there is no actually involved. He is coming back. And yes, we shouldn't play him more than 15-20 mins. We still need a center.

Btw, maybe DM could snag Haywood from Dallas. I realize he has a bad contract, but he is a pretty solid defensive center, and Dallas is going to resign Tyson Chandler, so we have no chance at him. Maybe I'm way off base, but I think it is something DM should at least look at...

So how do other teams build chemistry and be non disruptive when they have backups that play less than 24mins? If we had Yao all season for only 24mins, we make the playoffs.

I thought Yao had to pay half of whatever his NBA salary is to the Chinese government? So even if he gets offered, lets say 3 million a year, compared to a full MLE 5 million per year, each year he would lose 1 mil rather than 2 mil.

Morey just said that teams make the worst mistakes by building on a non-championship caliber foundation. So, with a new CBA on the way that will most assuredly lower maximum team payrolls, you want to commit over $9M per year to Brendan Haywood over the next five years???

If anything, keeping Haywood on the Mavs may help the Rockets more, since Cuban may find himself hamstrung with that contract (especially if he re-signs Chandler this offseason).

He'll be offered the full MLE by at least a couple of teams. So that's the starting point. Full MLE.

Couldn't be happier with the Big Guy coming back.
