Dude, we've seen enough of Jordan Hill. He turns the ball over, fumbles it around, is a mediocre jump shooter, terrible passer. He clogs up the offense. And he can't bang with the big boys defensively. Sure, he can jump out the ceiling but there's 9 other guys on the floor. He very rarely has the space to display his leaping ability and pure leaping ability is way down the totem pole when it comes to being an effective NBA player. He has low bball iq. He may get marginally better but there's many journeyman big men his size in the NBA and in the NBDL that would give us the same results. He's not a part of the Rox future.
Contenders might not be able to make him an offer in the new CBA. But, we might not either. I think BimaThug forecasted something like $7m in cap-space (under the old CBA), before signing Chuck and Yao. Who knows what will happen to that cap number. But, what if the Rockets want to offer a contract to a free agent, or make a trade for a high-dollar guy and take on salary for the other team? They might not really be willing to pay Chuck. As for why Morey would prefer a short contract: same reason the league does. Long guarantees are risky for the team because the player might become less effective on the court but still be paid the same, making him a burden on the payroll and impossible to trade. Short contracts, at least, are sometimes traded for for cap-management reasons, the player is less likely to fall well short of being worth the money in a short stint, you preserve your incumbency benefits with that player, and you have a better forecast on what specific burden it places on your payroll-management strategy. Matt Maloney got a 6-year contract for low dollars -- it still ended up being a bad contract.
Why would you do that? Hayes is 28 years old. He probably has reached his peak already. You don't want to have a role player disturb any trades you might want to do in the future.
Thibs might be able to talk management into offering the full MLE to Hayes. Is that enough? It might be. I really can't gauge his new higher value. I still get the feeling that most teams think he is still a liability on offense. I do know Thibs loves Hayes though. Wouldn't be surprised to see Hayes play as many minutes as Boozer for them. But Boozer compliments Noah so well. They really don't need Hayes.
I doubt it. Would Chuck really want to get spot minutes with Asik, Noah, Boozer and Gibson on the depth chart? Not happening. The Bulls will spend their money on a legit SG. They know Bogans is not the answer. I would do a sign and trade. Hayes for Asik?
The Heat could really use a guy like Chuck...lets bid him adieu and let him sign with a contender...lets see if thabeet will amount to anything..
Maloney was a different case. He only had one decent season under his belt and got the long contract from CD (much like Cato after a great pre-season game). We know with Hayes that he is very dependable. He has a track record over several seasons. As long as his per-season pay is reasonable for his level of skill, I would consider the risk of not being able to trade him a low risk. A high dollar value short-term contract, on the other hand, would have more of an immediate impact on our ability to sign a top free agent.
My guess is that if another team offers Chuck $27 million guaranteed, he's gone. I don't think the Rockets should offer that much. Even though he seems to like Houston a lot and has a family, Chuck should take the money and run. He can move back here in a few years like a lot of retired NBA players.
Bulls have deepest front court in the NBA and it's not even close. Hate to say it but there's probably 4 bigs on that roster that are as good or better than Chuck, Thomas being the one that isn't.
He is unrestricted. We have no say in weather he walks for free. His contract is officially up. He doesn't play for us right now.
Chicago does not need Chuck Hayes. I'm surprised that no one has posted the obvious. Wherever Rick Adelman goes (the Lakers?) is where Chuck will go. He knows and understands Rick's system and he is Rick's kind of player. The Chuckwagon's effectiveness can be attributed in part to the movement in Rick's offense as well as his own huge heart.
If he gets a significant offer? Then goodbye. He is a starter at a position we want to keep looking for his taller replacement every year. I know that sounds rude the way I say it. Thats just the reality and no other way to put it sort of. What do we say every year? We need more size at the center position. We need a rebounder who is taller and plays defense. Thats what we we say every year Yao is hurt. Chuck Hayes plays that position every year. So what does that say to other teams who will give alot of money? They are over paying and we should not bother to match them if they do so.
Even though it is hard for the young to understand Hayes, Scola, Lowry, Yao will end their careers as Rockets. These guys are Rocket Lifers.
I could only see Chuck leaving the Rockets, who will give him a "reasonable" contract offer, if Rick Adelman somehow gets offered a high profile coaching job, and that team needs him. The Lakers, if somehow they hired Adelman, could really use Chuck to be both Bynum insurance, and a defensive force off of the bench. Also, Chuck in the high post with Kobe & co. coming off of screens in the read/react offense is a scary thought.
Well I think they could become a better team by acquiring Hayes at above Morey's valuation but below the league's valuation and then trading a promising big man like Gibson for a high quality back up. If Thibodeau thinks Chuck is among the top defensive players in the entire league, I feel this is what he would do.
