4-Year-Old Collapses On Soccer Field, Dies
Cause Of Boy's Death Under Investigation

    :( + Q.E.P.D.

Take care of your young'uns, fellow Clutchfaners. I love my kids and also try to do the best to help other parents take care of their kids. I am saddened by this.

Heat exhaustion?? I don't want to assume, but... I was out during lunch for a bit and it was extremely hot...

I'm almost positive the poor kid had a pre existing heart condition.

probably so, i don't really think the parents weren't taking care of the kid, or endangering him, etc.

If he was only running around for 5-10 mins, I doubt it was heat exhaustion.

    That's horrible to hear...

I've read about a few professional soccer players who suddenly collapsed and died in the field. They were young too, but this kid is way younger. Such a tragedy indeed.

We really should let ourselves and our love ones have a check up first before engaging in strenuous sports. Who knows if we might have that pre existing heart condition.

You might be right about that, but... it might also be that he was outside, maybe watching games or in the stands without a hat, water or either?

Sounds like it would almost have to be this.

I feel terrible for that family.

My heart goes out to the family. I don't even want to imagine what they are going through.

I don't know why you would, but I guess one could speculate what it would take in terms of it being heat exhaustion related or something similar, as 5-10 minutes of soccer isn't it, but it's difficult to imagine it being anything but an unknown preexisting condition.

Hug em if ya got em.

It might've been a heart condition but my understanding is things like an enlarged heart don't manifest themselves until the teen years and then are lethal under extreme exertion. There was a case of a kid a month or two ago who was a football and basketball star who collapsed and died at the end of a basketball game right after he hit the winning shot.

Another possibility is that some athletes have died after taking a hit to the chest. In some rare cases a hit to the chest will cause the heart to spasm and not pump blood properly.

Anyway just tragic but it would be good to know, especially as a coach, what caused this to see if there is anyway to prevent something like this from happening.

So if you wanted to get your child tested for heart conditions and what not, would your physician actually do it? I just feel like they would pass it off saying the risk is minimal.

I would guess that if there was a family history of it, they'd do a test.

So awful...I have two girls in soccer. The youngest is in select and wants to practice everyday...It seems I constantly worry about hydration for her and this is a reminder why...-granted it may not have anything to do with fluids. . .

A 4-yr-old boy doesn't get heat exhaustion from running around outdoors for 5-10 minutes in only 83 degree heat.

    It must be something else.

more reasons you shouldnt play soccer.

But stuff like this is scary. I have a nephew who had a small hole in his heart when born and since he's starting to play sports you can't help but think about it.

Not sure if serious either but every sport has some risk of major injury or instant death. Even with that, very remote, possibility if and when I have kids I would want them outside playing sports rather than just have them inside playing video games or watching TV all day.

He probably had HOCM. This condition is inherited, so the only positive out of this is that his siblings might now be tested and seen whether their heart will also give out under strenuous exercise. HOCM is what Loyola Maramount star Hank Gathers died from many years ago. Cat Mobley also had to retire early due to the worsening of his condition as well.

Depends. I think they can heart those conditions.
They did with my son. Seemed to have had an enlarged heart when he was younger. We've been monitoring it. When he played Soccer as a young 'un
I was a bit concerned [because he was running all over the place]
    but
He made it through . . .Thank God!

Let's not forget former Rocket Jason Collier too. Seems he had the same or similar condition before he died. :(
