According to researchers Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden, as a user moves about their iPhone silently records timestamped latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates and stores them in a hidden file. When an iPhone is then synchronized with a computer, that file is then transferred over to the computer’s hard disk, where it is clandestinely stored.

“Alasdair has looked for similar tracking code in [Google's] Android phones and couldn’t find any,” said Warden. “We haven’t come across any instances of other phone manufacturers doing this.”

    Very interesting.

but, just to see if I got it.... beware of your gps phone knowing where you've been (only apple, they have yet to find it on others, whatever that means), like the phone companies already do for everyone. To feel better about it (you can't fix it) by seeing a little graphic, download and install this software from someone you don't know.

This is OUTRAGEOUS. A clear violation of my privacy!

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go post some more pics on my Facebook page.

Thats actually a good thing (and anybody who knows me knows that I am no Apple fan).

If you are going to get advertisements, at least get ads which are targeted to you.

And who cares about it? It isn't like they are going to go after you or anything (if you think that, you are just paranoid). More than likely, the data is anonymous.

Google does the same thing on Android, I don't see the big deal.

The snippet doesn't say anything about the part where your computer then sends that information to Apple. If your phone is recording data and not sharing it with anyone, where's the benefit for Apple?

tried to google this but can't think of good key words. about ten to fifteen years ago their was a movie with a character loosely based on bill gates. a guy created a computer program that allowed him access to everyone's computer who used his software. can't remember the complete plot, sound familiar to anyone?

The idea is that if you're creeped out about it enough, then you might do something about it.

But yeah, cell phone companies do it already and have a treasure trove of marketing information. It's only a matter of time before they open that up since there isn't a law to stop that kind of thing.

There are also apps that act like bugs by collecting all noise around the phone...like when your friends are around, what their gender is, when you watch tv, when you're active....

This is only the beginning of a steeper downward trend from privacy.

There have been versions of this idea in a few movies. The Net, Hackers, and Sneakers come to mind.

I agree, though it isn't the beginning. Just another step. But who can concern themselves with the likes of targeted ads when the breaches in privacy in these times can be so much more severe? Sadly things like this seem to become more and more prevalent, numbing us to the direction we're heading.
