If you are just using the Yahoo web site to deal with your mail, more than likely there is no spyware or virus on your Mac causing this.
Yahoo email has been getting easily hacked for about a year. It's a tough pill to swallow, but it's time to switch to Gmail.
Would the same issues apply if I'm logging into Yahoo Mail as a means to check my swbell.net account? I think all of the swbell, sbc, att.net accounts can log in via Yahoo mail.
A bunch of people who have written emails to me in the past have become victims of this. There are at least 10 people who have emailed me just ONE LINK to a pharmacy on the web, suspicious emails, etc. I continuously get emails from these friends' OLD addresses. In most cases, my friend doesn't even use the suspicious spammer account anymore. In recent times, friends have admitted logging in to places where they say the site didn't look legitimate. What happens is that they will use your username/pass or just clear-text authentication you think might be legitimate to just go into your account, get your contacts, and then will not even enter your account anywhere. They will MASQUERADE as yourself to send messages to people you know. Check the "to:" field, and it will be full of people with the same association or in the same circle of friends. For example, a fellow Clutchfan sent an email to me that I didn't think he sent. It turns out that it was an old address he wasn't using anymore. In another example, a girl to whom I sent ONE email about the Dynamo playing in the All-Star game just all of a sudden started sending me these SPAM messages... and she hadn't even sent me a real email before and we had no association... so it could have been my account that was phished. Any way... they already have your contacts and your address. There isn't much you could do to stop this. Your friends can't do anything either, but just DELETE the emails that supposedly come from you, and they can't mark them as SPAM either, since this means you will be marked as SPAM for REAL emails in the future, too. Xerobull, I've gotten the same emails from people with GMail accounts... so I don't think it's just Yahoo. I believe it's also related to FaceBook apps that illegitimately get your contacts' addresses and masquerade as you to send them SPAM.
If your username is your yahoo email and the password is the same, then yes. It happened to me a few months back- same username and password for paypal. Some Chinese hacker changed my default addy to China. Luckily I didn't lose any money. Moral of the story- don't use yahoo email, use different passwords for every account.
Ahh that's a pain in the ass, yeah. Hmm, yeah mines @swbell.net so maybe I'm safe on that one. I do have an @yahoo.com one, but I rarely use it so they can hack that one all they want
Exactly, malwarebytes isn't going to do anything if you're using webmail. Gmail is the way to go man. Sorry about what's going on.
My friend was just talking about this a couple of days ago with me. The gist of it is basically not to ever ever ever log on to anything when in a public hot spot. People using the same wifi connection as you can easily go into any account you log into... fb, bank, emails, etc. And you don't even need to be some hacker to do it, apparently it's not that difficult. Maybe you've accessed your account using a public wifi? This is probably a "we landed on the moon" type of news for most, but it's new to me. Just thought some people that aren't tech savvy at all, like me, might want to know.
You don't know what the hell you're yapping about. Gmail is more corrupted. They sell and collect your informations and yes they can also be hacked.
Thanks for all the helpful info fellows and fellitas. I actually think this might be it, because I don't have a Facebook and rarely put my info into lesser known sites. My mom recently got wifi at her house and before that, when i would visit, i would log on to some bootleg connection that i could pick up from her living room. I'm sure I've logged into my e-mail from there. Somehow last night (was drinking) I managed to pull up where my account was being logged onto at and can't seem to figure out how to get back there, go figure.
You don't know what the hell you're yapping about. Yahoo is the spam/phishing king of the web email clients. GMail has it's fair share, but nowhere near the volume of a Yahoo email account. As for selling/collecting your info, they all do that.
Oh really? I have been using it for 10 yrs and I don't recall any spam. If you are smart enough you should create multiple email accounts. One for business use and the others for junks(ei... applying to tons of websites). The most spams is from my hotmail account because of the sites that I sign up on. If you enjoy having GMail and Google tracking your every move go right ahead.
