We also tried the special seafood boil recipe this weekend and it was good! Next time though we'll probably just use Louisina or Slap Ya Mama seasoning rather than the X-Hot boil we got from HEB. We boiled up blue crab, shrimp, mushrooms, corn cobs and two types of sausages. Great boil recipe that we'll tweak next time with a little less sugar.
Looks good Tommyboy! But if I may just say, your sauce looks really liquidy. Did it not thicken at all? I agree with using a lot less sugar. I only used about 1/4 of what it called for.
Boils look fine minus the peel-n-eat skrimps yall be using. GET REAL ASS SHRIMP YO, none of this cheap bait shrimp, damn!
The sauce (darker one in the smaller pan) was thick enough pour on but how thick is it supposed to be? Or are you referring to the boil itself? We may have used too much water and we also added the stick of butter late.
Yeah...I'm talking about the sauce, not the boil itself. I think it should be extremely thick. At the end it should be just bits of garlic covered in spices and lime juice. What I like to do is toss the seafood, corn, potatoes and mushrooms in a small cooler, pour the sauce on it and shake the hell out of it. Should not be any liquid left in there whatsoever.
Two questions. 1. How long did it take to make all that? 2. How long did it take to devour all that? Anything with a ratio more than 2:1 is unacceptable and I'd rather go eat it at a restaurant.
It takes a while. Its not even really cheaper then a restaurant. Prolly the same price. But for me, much like grilling, its just as much fun cooking it as eating it.
Then our sauce was definitely not thick enough. We did notice that the sugar did not completely melt into the sauce. Maybe that's what didn't make it thick enough. And maybe we didn't use enough garlic cloves but I thought we followed the recommended amount. We'll definitely try this again and hopefully the sauce will be thicker.
lol. You think like I used to (and still do, for the most part) : "If it takes an hour to prepare and 10-15 minutes to eat, something's wrong..."
I also became allergic to shell fish in my early 30's but I love it so much that I pop a 25mg generic Benadryl and it keeps my allergic reaction away (hives). The only bad thing is I knock out right after dinner.
This is making me hungry. Think I'll boil some crab again tonight. Crawfish maybe this weekend. Pics to follow!
food allergies can develop mid life? holy crap, i didn't know that... it would suck if i developed some type of bacon allergy... i love bacon
