It does sound like it's Rick's call. He does have the right want to win it all, and the Rockets as fun as they have been to watch, are far from winning it all.

What is the knock on Mike Brown? He is from Pop's coaching tree right? Wouldn't that fit well with how the team is built?

In each of the Rockets previous coaching hires, they went with proven coaches in Rick Adelman and Jeff Van Gundy that had sat out the previous seasons. Former Cleveland coach Mike Brown, former Hawks coach Mike Woodson and Van Gundy could fit that pattern.

Rockets assistant Elston Turner, Dallas' Dwane Casey, San Antonio's Mike Budenholzer and Boston's Lawrence Frank, the former Nets coach, are assistant coaches expected to be targeted by teams with openings.

Larry Brown and Mike Dunleavy discussed the Rockets opening before Van Gundy was hired.

The job, however, has changed greatly since the previous coaching changes.

The Rockets reached the playoffs in Adelman¡¯s first two seasons, beating the Trail Blazers and pushing the Lakers to seven games in the 2008-09 Western Conference semifinals. But Yao Ming was injured in Game Three of that series and played just five games in the two seasons. Rather than coach a team led by Yao and Tracy McGrady, who played just 72 game together in Adelman¡¯s tenure, Adelman instead oversaw the transition of the franchise from the Yao and McGrady era to a team built around Adelman¡¯s motion-based offense.

This looked like it was coming but seriously ... this strikes me as, at best, a move that doesn't make any difference at all and, more accurately, a remarkably DUMB move.

Seriously, who else is out there who's going to be able to coach a no-All-Star team to a winning record consistently?

    Just dumb, dumb, dumb.

I'm betting Les Alexander, stuck with salaries and future prospects, felt he needed to do something so he just fired the coach.

that is a fire sale estimate to be honest. I would expect a lot more but I see a full blow up by Morey.

so the texans keep a coach thats underachieved the past 3 season, and the rockets fire a coach thats overachieved the past 3 seasons.

    Sad news....

He needs to go to a championship contender, maybe the Lakers if Jackson actually retires after this season.

Only a contender would want Martin. That means crappy draft picks. Martin is only packaged for a young player with high potential or a proven star.

The only thing good about the Rockets the past several years with injuries was that they were still competitive fun to watch....even thats gone now :(

For the most part, I've been pretty happy about Morey's personnel decisions, but this is completely idiotic. A better coach than RA cannot be had. Now, we'll have to watch the team struggle to learn a new system.

It's maybe more of Rockets prepping to tank instead of continuing this constant hamster wheel of mediocrity.
If you're a hall of fame coach, is that something you'd be interested in doing?

Morey has been a good GM so I'll give him a pass on this.

But this new coach had better be impressive in his first season or my opinion of this whole situation is going to leave a very long lasting bitter taste.

One thing for sure, Morey is no longer a god.

yeah, we get it, you are tickled.

We got it after the first post and the second and third and fourth.

You are seriously starting to develop DD syndrom, and as such you better self moderate before what happened to him happens to you.

Not a threat, but an observation based on your posting tendencies lately.

Ftr, I dont think this is wise, but will withhold judgement till I see who they have a mind to replace him with.
