Then why does he want the federal government to get involved in helping millions of school age kids in the U.S. to get an iPad? That defeats the point of his argument - doesn't it?

Did you read my link as to what he said a month ago? If not, the short version is that he was extolling the virtues of the iPad and wanting the federal government to get involved in helping every school age child to get their hands on one.

agree with robbie that his speech was ineffective. regarding tablet price points, apple is leading the way. to keep those prices reasonable, maquiladoras are necessary... even if it means folks over at foxconn jumping to their deaths (of course i don't agree with this). what was is jjj's solution?

    i agree.

The issue is not jobs. The issue is income diffusion.

Here's where the money from purchasing a $500 iPad goes.

$250 - 50% Cost of Raw Materials - Goes mostly outside the U.S.
All told, 52 percent of the retail price of the lowest-priced $499 iPad is tied up in its hardware, including the $9 cost of actually building the thing along with box contents priced at $7.50 for a total of $259.60. http://www.livescience.com/6318-ipad-breakdown-costs.html
$200 - 40% Profit - Goes to shareholders around the world $10 - 2% Cost of Blue Collar Labor - Goes to China $40 - 8% Cost of White Collar Labor (research, engineering, marketing, sales, management, etc) AND Federal Taxes - Stays in United States

Sales in United States: 14 Million iPads
    Revenue: $7,000,000,000
One way to look at the data above is "Americans Spent $7 billion dollars and only received $560 million back". The issue is that the current system allows income siphoning from the low and middle class in the United States to the rich class in America and the World. The solution is reduction in shareholder profits an increase in salary for the jobs in the United States.

It's bad enough that democrats aren't doing anything about this but republicans want the rich to have more tax cuts. :(

I know plenty of Apple shareholders who are certainly not rich and would fall into the middle class range. Also, with Apple Stock, the only time a shareholder receives any benefits is when they sell as they don't pay dividends.

First off, I did not mean that this applies to Apple only. This is going on for almost every product sold here. It's just easy to use Apple as an example because they have a lot of data on them.

For your first point, http://sociology.ucsc.edu/whorulesamerica/power/wealth.html (See table 5a). It's illogical to assume that you personal experiences are applicable to the big picture.

Your second point seems to have more weight but begs the question, 'then why would anyone want to own stock?'. I don't think there's a need to get into that. Let's just say stock value may not be as stable as the dollar it's worth but is still considered "wealth". And most of the rich own this type of wealth.

Samsung is hiring 300 more engineers in Austin because of a new contract with Apple. At least good to see higher level jobs in America.

I think the Al Sharpton vs Jessie Jackson debate is over based on their gene pool alone.

I think he was ranting about how rapid technological advancement is making thousands of jobs obsolete, especially here in the US. There aren't very many high paying jobs left here that don't require a lot of training or education, they've been either shipped out or made obsolete by technology. Thats bad news for a lot of american's who can't or won't go to college

His point was that while technology changes and things get revolutionized, we are not reaping the benefit that we can from it because the jobs are in China. However, this doesn't change the fact that the technology in of itself is good.
