The Niners already have the 45th pick in the 2nd round so they could have their choice of QBs outside of Newton/Gabbert to go along with Peterson if he's there.

Good point; I suppose their inclination would have to be move down to 11, draft whomever, and then trade back up into the first to get a QB that they like. There's speculation that as many as 5 QBs could go in the first round now (Newton, Gabbert, Locker, Mallet, and Dalton/Ponder/Kaepernick).

Just trying to sift through the smoke and see what's feasible. Probably won't end up moving up to get Peterson, but it's fun to speculate about what's going to happen 10 days from now.

There could to be 6 QB's off the board by the 49'ers second pick.

    Edit:

    Oops... Beat to it.

Newton and Dalton are the only sure things as far as QB...Dalton because he is a proven winner and will go to a good team in the draft...He will a steal....Newton is gonna be a downright superstar by year 3..Book It!!!!!11

It's definitely a little challenging trying to see through all the smoke screens teams are putting out right now. One thing I've definitely noticed since closely following the NFL draft is the hyping up of QBs right before. The last time 5 QBs went in the first was over a decade ago, since then, we've typically seen only 2-3 go in the first.

But particularly with this QB class, even the Top 2 QBs have pretty big question marks. Personally, I wouldn't even look at Locker or Mallet in the 1st and I get the feeling both will fall significantly.

Panic trumps greed. The problem this year is free agency happens.after the draft, and you can't talk with.FA's to feel them out.

The only QB currently on the 49'ers roster is David Carr. Probably.they sign someone.else, but if you were an agent, the prospect of Carr as the only option gives you lots of leverage.

Here's a good write up of the 49ers QB situation, a lot of interesting tidbits including the QB FA market and draft. I think SF has it's draw for a QB on the market (good defense, decent offensive weapons, former NFL QB coach, location, etc...). But if Newton/Gabbert are gone at #7, I personally wouldn't trade up back into the 1st for one of the remaining QBs, but that's just my personal opinion.

Here are the results of a mock draft I was doing on another site:

Rd 1 – Robert Quinn, OLB
    Rd 2 – Rahim Moore, S
    Rd 3 – Allen Bailey – DE
    Rd 4 – Brooks Reed – OLB
    Rd 5 – Jalil Brown – CB

Obviously went with a very strong defensive bent. Although CB/DB was a huge issue, I think it was a 2-fold issue last year and we need some players who can get after the QB. Quinn, Bailey, and Reed all fit that mold.

The next couple rounds the Texans have 3 picks, so I'm targeting DT/CB and Mr. Irrelevant may be a WR or QB.

Let me know what you think, I definitely wish some of the top tier CB talent had fallen to Rd 2, but Moore is a decent pickup.

Brooks Reed will be gone by the middle of the second.

If they only came away with Quinn & Reed and nobody else, it would be a great draft.

    11. Texans: Aldon Smith, linebacker, Missouri.
Draftniks question Smith’s ability to drop into coverage, but the Texans won’t pick him to shut down tight ends. Drawing comparisons to DeMarcus Ware, Missouri’s single-season sack record holder can be new Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips’ next big-time pass rusher.

I would love for us to draft Jones. He would be a perfect fit with Dre'. And for those ppl who think we don't need offense you are wrong... Jacoby will be a restricted free agent and he has no hands. Walter isn't really that great of a 2nd option. Aside from them, the depth at WR is terrible...

Let's see...#4 in Total Offense vs. #30 in Total Defense (last in pass defense)

Don't think people are saying we don't need to draft offense at all rather that we need to draft defense first and foremost.

Jacoby was a third round pick; I believe Walter was a 7th round pick. Walter looked past his prime last year and may very well be - but he had several productive seasons here and Jones has shown flashes of putting it together.

Point is: Finding a 2nd WR is MUCH easier, and much less of a priority, than finding a #1 defensive-anything. Spending *any* "day one" picks (rds 1-3) on an offensive player - unless said offensive player is just heads and tails the best prospect available by miles - would be a total waste of resources, IMO.

They *have* to improve their defensive personnel. Have to.

Um, it's not that we don't NEED offense, but I equate this to repairing a house. Drafting Julio Jones would be like buying yourself a new entertainment center while your kitchen is being flooded due to a busted pipe. You have to assess priorities first, and our defense was historically bad last season.

Is the actual draft going to be a "mock" draft? I mean, what are they drafting *for* if they're not going to play?

Everything the NFL is doing right now is "mock". "Mock" draft, "mock" preseason schedule, "mock" regular season schedule. They're "mocking" this arbitration. They're "mocking" it all.

    It's a travesty, a sham, and a mockery.

    It's a... a TRAVESHAMOCKERY!!!

fwiw: @LanceZierlein Correct RT @walterfootball: Brian Baldinger: I think you can plug this in right now - Aldon Smith will be Wade Phillips' guy with 11th pick
