I have no idea why they put Obama's face on a monkey. I just don't scream 'racism' like a nervous twitch like you do. You are like Uncle Leo who calls everyone an anti-Semite. What a load of crap. Of course Obama is seen as a moron by his opponents. I think Obama has a similar IQ to a monkey.
I have a hard time believing that any non-extreme individual can demean Obama's intellect. Sure, he might be an unfit president, but he is absolutely intellectual.
Read the entire thread. As far as the topic of the thread, the bold part is pretty much all that needs to be said:
Um, not so much. I'm usually the last person to bring up race, but in this case, it's a fool's errand to try to ignore the context that a lot of these insults are made in. 'No wonder there's no certificate'? Really? The public perception of Bush as less than intelligent was pretty much reinforced by his constant verbal and logical gaffes. I don't know about you, but I thought Bush was stupid (relative to his peers) because of the way he spoke and his less than sparkling academic/business career. Bush gave us plenty of reason to criticize his intelligence that had nothing to do with his policy choices. Do you see where I'm going with this? There is a difference between thinking someone is wrong and thinking someone is stupid as a monkey. So tell me, how is the self-made, articulate, Harvard Law constitutional scholar/professor, as stupid as a monkey?
You can't compare a black person to a monkey. Forget about intention, since everybody knows that there are going to be numerous people that are going to be offended by it.
A common theme in these ultra conservatives is a complete distrust of intellectuals. To their own dismay, they put their faith in corporate movements and ignore scientists and other intellectuals who seem to have the population's best interests in mind. Can anyone explain this to me?
You do seem to ignore over a century of repeated racist use of the figure of a monkey, chimp, ape, in relation to black people based on nothing other than prejudice, ignorance, discrimination, and racism. After more than 100 years of that kind of imagery meant as racist, it should come as no surprise that depicting a black President as a chimp would be seen as racist, while it might not be racist when a white president is depicted as one. Sorry, but after decades and decades of using the imagery in such a way, it no longer gets the benefit of the doubt.
There is obviously a lot of baggage that comes along with the association, but even removing all of that from the equation and everybody's racial sensibilities, when you compare somebody who is actually intelligent/sophisticated/successful to a monkey, you come off looking pretty pathetic... If Republicans didn't want their guy compared to a monkey, then they shouldn't have chosen an inept posterboy for nepotism that was a living, breathing comedy quote machine behind the microphone. I guess on the same token, if Democrats didn't want their guy compared to a monkey, then they shouldn't have chosen a guy with darker skin, a funny name, and ties to a country that isn't 'murrica?
For a very good reason. I'm neither black nor white and I'm well aware that calling black people apes or monkeys is extraordinarily racist and up there with calling them the n-word. tallanvor is being completely disingenuous here to try to defend this indefensible garbage that came out of his organization.
Conservatives only distrust science when it intersects with their religion/culture's sensibilities. Otherwise, they're fairly supportive of it. The whole anti-intellectual attitude beats me though, I'm all for having the best and the brightest represent us. Joe the Plumber can fix my pipes, but he can't engineer my infrastructure worth s**t.
The image shows Obama as an ape-child with his ape-parents. In your estimation, do you think the creator merely intended to communicate that not only is Obama as dumb as an ape, but his parents were as well? That seems... unlikely. And then the caption, "Now you know why no birth certificate." Why underscore the question of origins with this image? Because apes are from Africa? If you want me to believe that there is any doubt as to the intent of this picture with the caption, I'd have to believe Davenport to be so horrendously stupid as to be incompetent for office anyway. I know you're just trolling, but this is pure rtsy territory. You've got to pick your trolling battles.
Probably because they don't like him and he's black. There's a long history in the US and elsewhere of people portraying black people as monkeys or chimps. I'm surprised you're not aware of that.
I'm a liberal, but I gotta admit... people depicted Bush as a monkey; the only people who are complaining that depicting Obama is a monkey only want to throw some controversial fire on the Repubs.
