...according to jesse jackson jr. anyway.

kind of a roundabout way that saying maquiladoras and all things neoliberal talk by the imf are not what they are cracked up to be. focusing on apple is unfair, but agree with neoliberalism not being the solution for all struggling countries. keeping those jobs here="treadmill to mediocrity"? or is this something that is just inevitable?

may end up in d&d before it's said and done (because of the political aspect), so mods of course feel free to move.

oh... and before anyone else says it... "apple sux gais."

I can't watch the video... but I'm picturing this is pretty much the same as those people who whine about newspapers being killed by the internet, video killed the radio star, the automobile killed the buggy whip making industry.... etc.

And here is what JJJ said last month:

"Jackson’s iPad critique marks a drastic turnabout for the congressman, who last month proposed that the federal government work to put an iPad in the hands of every student in the United States.

"These devices are revolutionizing our country — and they will fundamentally alter how we will educate our children," he said at the time."

He should have used the Nook as a better example. It's been out longer.

Yes. It's the iPad's and overall technology's fault! I believe that so many Americans must not continue to become educated and blame everything on technological advances... and continue to cry "THEY'RE TAKIN' OUR JERBS!!!"

    LOL!

He makes a great point. (He is not saying that we should eliminate Ipads at all)

"The Ipad is made in China"

That is what hurts the most.

As for the video, everything made sense up until he mentioned the first amendment (wtf was he talking about there?) but I don't see what we can do about it and why we should do something about it.

Technology has been putting unskilled labor out of work for years, we can't ban it to take steps backward to protect these jobs, these people need to go out there and acquire new skills or find something else.

And it has to be manufactured abroad for Apple to compete (since all the major competitors are Asian companies capable of delivering a similar tablet at that price point).

I see what he is saying (except the first amendment reference) but no idea wtf we should do about it (boycott tablets and stick to paper books?)

    This was his point.

I'm pretty sure he said he bought the Ipad so he isn't against the technology. He's just against replacing domestic "paper jobs" with tech jobs in another country.

Agreed. I think he has a good point, but he just didn't say it in a very effective fashion.

Yet, even though he acknowledges that the iPad is made in China, he wants the federal government to work to put an iPad in the hands of every school child in the United States.

Maybe after he said that, the publishing companies wrote him a huge check causing him to backpedal.

The point he's trying to make is that the govt should do something to move the labor force back to the US.

The truth is, there are over 20 cases of suicide incidents in the ipad factory in China alone because they're overworked. It's inthe Time magazine.
